How would that honor Mandela? I mean, I understand the African-American objection to that flag, but what has it to do with Nelson Mandela?
 
South Carolina beat Clemson for like the third or fourth year in a row. No way they are lowering their flag during this winning streak.
 
Should be honor him for the August 2012 massacre of Lonmin miners at Marikana ?......or the white farmers that were raped and murdered by the ANC ?

According to the US flag code the President can issue the Executive order for this at their discretion, but there is no penalty for non-compliance.

It's another one of those made up man bites dog controversies. OK, so some ignorant red neck in South Carolina doesn't want to show his respects to Mandela. Big surprise there. That's his right but who cares?
 
Though rare, the lowering of flags for foreign citizens is nothing new.

George W. Bush did it for Pope John Paul II eight years ago. Bill Clinton did it when former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated in the 1990s.

In fact, the practice goes as far back as 1965, when President Lyndon Johnson ordered flags lowered for former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill
