we don't have any forces to speak of except naval - I'm not sure if we have any airbases
we did for awhile in SA, but not now. So what exactly do you want to "withdrawal"

The Russians are intent on blue water ports beyond Tartus ,Syria;
what do you think a Russian presence similar in size to the 6th fleet could do working with an Iranian army?

There cooperation in Syria would look like childs' play. They could roll over large pieces of the region.
And left unchecked under Putin, you can be damn sure they would, like they did in the Ukraine.
 
EDIT. we do have special forces - maybe 7000k in Iraq, and they are making great gains against ISIS.
They are in Syria too - and thy have helped degrade ISIS there also.

I agree with you about USSR and Afghanistan, but we have been there longer and I don't see the situation at all the same.
