I just had to stop you there, Ralph, because context is important throughout ALL parts of the bible.
The Tree that Adam and Eve ate from was the Tree of Knowledge - which began the intermingling of good and evil, depending on interpretation.
But the real point is that it was eating the fruit of this tree that got Adam and Eve booted out of Eden. So knowledge begets the fear of god - because logic, rationality and knowledge are those things that shed more light on the whole "God thing" than even the most radicalized, scripture quoting, blinded-by-faith zealot you would care to name (including you).
No...the real point is the fact that 'your' OPINION....is worthless when one can go to the very source of Christian Doctrine, the Word of God and comprehend the knowledge that God wanted to reveal to man. Simply because God does not fit into your personal pigeon hole concerning what "He should" be like is the most revealing thing realized in your personal opinion. Of course no one knows the mind of God or everything that God knows, He reveals what He wants, when He wants and reserves knowledge that He does not wish to reveal.
The reason that God forbid Adam to eat from the tree of knowledge in gaining the realization that there was a good and an evil is revealed in scripture. Before the law of God was broken by Adam...there was no responsibility for SIN existing, thus no punishment, no death either eternal or physical. Man would no longer be the infant innocent creation of God...but would be LIKE GOD (the spirit) in the fact of being able to comprehend Good and Evil with the capacity to choose between the two polar opposites. (Unlike God, man makes errant decisions even with the best intentions, because man is not omniscient.
Its clear that man is made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26). God is a Spirit (John 4:24), therefore that imagine is Spiritual not physical. When did man actually BECOME "like God" in knowing and being able to choose between good and evil? "And the Lord God said, the man has now become like one of us (the Godhead), knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also (as he did with the tree of knowledge...implied) and eat, and live forever." -- Genesis 3:22. Thus, man was banned from the Garden and immorality, for the wages of sin is death (Genesis 3:23)
The innocent have no concept of right or wrong. Thus they are incapable of sinning. Animals can't sin because there is no morality in the animal kingdom...no law. Its only after a child matures into adulthood that he she becomes responsible for their own action that results in the breaking of God's moral code..i.e., SIN. (Deut.1:39)
Adam (being responsible for Eve and her actions) was duped into sinning by the ultimate deceiver, the father of all liars....the fallen one, Satan. (John 8:44)
God warned Adam not eat of the tree of knowledge with the implication that Sin would then exist and along with sin comes the wages thereof....death (Genesis 2:16-17). Notice that when Eve listened to the lie from Satan she does not repeat the warning from God...literally, she adds things, (Genesis 3:2-3). God said they were not to eat of the fruit from the tree of knowledge, Eve said, "we are not to even touch it..." When Eve "embellished" God's word by adding onto it....Satan saw his opportunity to stir rebellion. Satan told her..."touch it and see nothing will happen.." Eve did, nothing happened, this emboldened Eve to actually eat of the fruit.
Paul (being inspired by the Holy Spirit of God) explains. "For until the law (the first law or covenant between man and God was an oral warning, DO NOT PARTAKE of the tree of knowledge)....sin was in the world but sin is not imputed when there is no law." -- Rom. 5:13 Thus what is called a sin...is the breaking of God's law or covenants (1 John 3:4)
Its true as a logical conclusion that if God had not made known to Adam that sin actually existed...Adam might not have been tempted in the first place. What? Are we then to conclude that the law of God is responsible for sin? Hardly as the Apostle concludes....the law but reveals sin, sin cannot exist without the act of sinning taking place (Rom. 7:7-12).
So why did God place the tree in the Garden? Because man was endowed with FREE WILL.....and God had a plan for salvation before He even created the world. (Eph. 3:8-12, 1 Pet. 1:17-21)
God is omniscient....God has put into effect "eternal" plans even before time began, plans that we might not fathom but plans that are revealed by God at a point in time of His choosing...not mans'.
In other words to put it succinctly, Free Will exists "A MAN'S HEART PLANS HIS WAYS, (when adhered) BUT THE LORD DIRECTS HIS PATH." -- Prov. 16:9
Just like any Good and Loving (Benevolent) parent.....God advises, but at some point in time, He must set them free to make their own decisions, even though the parent loves them eternally...and hopes their advise guides the child's path...ultimately their own heart PLANS the way....for they have been created in the image of their parents, endowed with free will and the capacity to choose between right and wrong themselves. That decision making capacity is what makes us LIKE GOD...our FATHER. No animal possess that ability to reason out their own morality/fate...only man.
