You say this is first amendment protected but it's actually not in that these players could be let go tomorrow if ownership wanted to. In this case the teams/league is supporting it but it doesn't take away that the first amendment isn't guaranteeing them a right to their jobs based on their actions

No way the league can be happy about this. Not good for business.

Many owners are standing in protest with their players .. as the picture above demonstrates.
