Liberal whites have had many opportunities to back black candidates for president. In 2004, there were two black people running for Democratic nominee. So, here in the real world, there's no sign that white liberals were just waiting for the chance to vote for someone simply to make him or her the first black president.

It may have. Many things impacted the election -- Comey's October surprise, Putin's interference, and somewhat lower black turnout among them.
