This time of year I always get a melancholy feeling for the people who died after making a difference in our lives.

George Carlin - in my opinion one of the greatest comedians who ever lived, and one of those who played the english language like a virtuoso.

Arthur C. Clarke - a pioneer in science fiction and a creative visionary.

Bo Diddley - one of the great guitarists of all time.

Isaac Hayes - the coolest voice ever recorded and one who gave back.

Paul Newman - Left the world a richer place for his works.

Bettie Page - what can I say, the original fantasy girl

I am sure I missed a bunch, but these were ones that stuck out for me.

I know Carlin. He may not have known me, but I felt like he was an old friend.

I had his albums (large vinyl disk played on something called a turntable - for you youngsters). I remember we had to wait till Mom was not in the house to play them.

I can still do the entire "Hal Sleet your hippy-dippy weatherman" routine from memory.

My son , hubby and I went and saw Carlin last year. To my son Carlin is a god. He loves everything he did and sees life in much the same way Carlin did. We are so glad we saw him live before he took the great dirt nap.

We lost my father, a better and more important person than any of those guys.

My condolences. But the coolest father left us in 2004. Mores the pity.

Well, we will have to disagree on whos father was coolest... It was a big loss to me and many who knew him. We lost him January 12.

I was only messing with you. My Dad was a remarkable guy, but I couldn't honestly say anything about someone else's father.

The loss gets easier but never really goes away.

Thats what I hear. I guess it is starting to get a bit easier, though the holidays are kinda hard.

I almost posted about my Father in law.

I guess I just did huh?

He was the most wonderful person I had ever met. I had the crazy position of having a father in law who I wished had been my father. He was so kind and fair and very sweetly funny. He was a gorgeous, tall man who was so bright and knew so many things for a guy who was self educated. I never heard a cruel word come out of his mouth in the 30+ years I knew him. Its a weird feeling of guilt I always bear for loving my FiL more than my own Dad. I know Mine did the best he could but when it comes right down to facts my FiL was just a much better person.

My father was not the coolest, or maybe he was and I was too young and stupid to realize it when he died. However about 50 years later I still wish I could sit down and talk with him one more time.
