Scenic Pakistani valley falls to Taliban militants

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Taliban militants are beheading and burning their way through Pakistan's picturesque Swat Valley, and residents say the insurgents now control most of the mountainous region far from the lawless tribal areas where jihadists thrive.

The deteriorating situation in the former tourist haven comes despite an army offensive that began in 2007 and an attempted peace deal. It is especially worrisome to Pakistani officials because the valley lies outside the areas where al-Qaida and Taliban militants have traditionally operated and where the military is staging a separate offensive.

"You can't imagine how bad it is," said Muzaffar ul-Mulk, a federal lawmaker whose home in Swat was attacked by bomb-toting assailants in mid-December, weeks after he left. "It's worse day by day."

Ohhh....I get it now! You're trying to say no Muslims can be peaceful, because some aren't.

You must vote Republican. Sorry - my mistake.

all or nothing with the right wingers it seems.
For us or against us, evil or good, victory or defeat, etc

It's interesting, the only person I've ever known to have read the Qur'an and have studied Islam extensively had come to the conclusion that the very depiction Mohammed as a violent man who married a prepubescent girl was indicative of how Islam was meant to be taken since he was their prophet. Essentially, she had argued that Islamic scripture, being the basis of Islam, was directly responsible for the violent tendencies of the extremists and so Islam as a religion was inextricably tied to this violence.

I am not sure I agree though. I would argue that the acts of religious extremists, and the frequency with which we see them, has more to do with political manipulation than the content of the texts.

Furthermore, Jesus excluded, the Bible is hardly a 'peaceful' book by any means. Not only that, but the manner with which Christianity is practiced has evolved quite a bit over the years. And then, there's the fundamentalists who tend to take Jesus' upturning of the tables a bit too seriously.

In fact, the way Islam is practiced in the states is nothing but not a modern, somewhat secularized way of practicing it. The city of Dearborn, MI has the largest concentration of Muslims in the western world and yet it is a fairly well off city with absolutely no problems related to extremism. Why Europe has more trouble with riots is a discussion for another time, but I've got my own theories on that one.

But at the end of the day, I've never bothered to read the Qur'an and I have no intention to do so in the near future. Ultimately, I think that the actions of that crazy Mohammed guy and how its depicted in the book are ultimately not that important when it comes to how the majority practice the religion.

with all due respect...just because people do not follow their religion does not negate the religion....in that....the belief of that religion is still there, the wording and commands...it matters somewhat what the people do, but what the people do does not take away from the religion...

If you are referring to who I think you are, she used to regularly shred muslims with their own religious teachings and dogma.

She was a fun lady. Toughest debator I ever saw.

No, she isn't. You're definitely a fool. And you're not fooling anyone.

you made an untrue statement...and you are not helping your case with the above post. instead rambling on with ad hominems...why don't you prove your statement, show where i stated such or support such. else be a man and recant your untrue statement.

You guys always whine about ad hominems - it's because you listen to Hannity too much.

Do us a favor. Explain what you intended by describing thugs who behead people as "peaceful." What was the purpose of that adjective?

Dazzle us.

Now you have a "case".

Why are right wingers so annoying? I wonder if they are born that way.

you know as well as i that i was using sarcasm. there are many people who believe muslims can do no wrong and that all muslims are peaceful and it is only israel and the us who are violent/evil. my choice of words is used to convey that not all muslims are peaceful.

if all you have are insults...don't cry when somebody calls you on it.
