The Current trump failure

Certainly a lot of money is going out the door for treatments and vaccines and studies.

$10 billion spent on vaccine studies and manufacturing worldwide sounds like a lot of money, until you think about how much failing to find a vaccine would cost us. Then multiplying it by ten, and spending $100 billion starts seeming like not enough.

Contact tracing is useless given where we are, how do you not know this?

It keeps getting harder and harder to get this under control. Had trump reacted quickly, it would have been much easier. The longer we put it off, the more exponentially harder it gets.

A country like Taiwan or New Zealand just has to keep Covid-19 out, because they have done such a good job.

If we need 10 times capacity, and trump is building 10% to 20% of capacity, that would be 1 to 2% of what we need. The math of that one is simple.

How much contact tracing is happening in the USA? The British are apologizing for only doing 80% of the contact tracing... In America it is closer to 0%. There is some private contact tracing, and a tiny amount of local government contact tracing, but nothing beyond that little amount.

So when it comes to contact tracing, it is hard to argue there is a sincere effort being made in the USA.

Look at most of the posts by the Alt Right, and you will see a pattern. They are hoping that magically Covid-19 will go away. That is not being willing to put a sincere effort into it, but just hoping we get lucky.

Well, it appears to be going away lol.

It will likely never virtually disappear but we clearly have the worst of the outbreak behind us. The first spike was easily the worst; the second spike in the Sun Belt was much better—so the trend is encouraging.

What we should do is stop testing asymptomatic people, because it’s nearly pointless—and because all it’s doing is keeping ‘case’ numbers artificially high and slowing down economic recovery and keeping the fear level up.

Stop testing college kids; test only symptomatic people *using a low cycle threshold* and watch the hospitals—then react accordingly if they start to fill.

This should be easy.

This may not be good for Democrats this close to the election but not everything is about democrats and/or getting rid of the Bad Orange Man.

$2 billion wasted on ventilators that were never needed...... spent because the "experts" had everyone hyperventilating over ventilators....which it turned out should only be used as a last resort but these fuckers did not know that.

Well, it appears to be going away lol.

It appears to be washing over us in wave after wave, with the daily death rate bouncing between 1500, and 500. There is a reason that the world is cutting America off, and it is because trump is hoping that it will go away on its own.

The first spike was easily the worst; the second spike in the Sun Belt was much better—so the trend is encouraging.

Medical staffs learned a huge amount about treatment, and cut the death rate in nearly half. There is not much more to learn about treatment.... So we are stuck with wave upon wave of death.

What we should do is stop testing asymptomatic people, because it’s nearly pointless

That is just giving up on any attempt to contain this. It is the worst possible strategy.

Stop testing college kids

And we have a worse strategy. Not only would that encourage the spread of Covid-19. It would hit the medical centers hard, because the major research centers are tied to colleges. And if you think medical students don't interact with undergraduates, you are sorely mistaken.

Worse yet, American universities are the envy of the world. As they become diseased cesspools, it will remind the world of the importance of cutting us off. trump will turn the USA into North Korea.

This should be easy.

I am breaking this one out into its own thread.

I am hoping there is a vaccine.
If this was a standard virus, then we would need 10 vaccines hitting large-scale clinical trials to have a 90% chance of one of them working. That is 10 vaccines with 10 different manufacturing methods. And that is assuming a standard virus, Covid-19 seems far more difficult.
WORLDWIDE - there are about 5 in or going into phase 3 clinical trials.
They do use different methods of generating the vaccine (not an expert on this part)

The math is so simple that it does not need a link. If we need 10 times capacity, and trump is only willing to fund 10% to 20% of capacity, then trump is only willing to fund 1% to 2% of what is needed. If you need a link to prove the math, then it is a good thing you are no longer teaching.

The real question is do we need 10 times capacity. Here is a link to help you with that:
Instead of seeing unproven vaccines as an extravagance, the world needs to think of them as an insurance policy. Research suggests that if ten or more vaccines are in development, there is a 90% chance of finding one which works. Once one of these candidates proves to be effective, billions of doses will need to be distributed quickly. But it is impossible to know in advance which candidate will succeed. Governments should therefore help pharmaceutical firms produce vast quantities of a range of different vaccines—ideally, numbering tens of billions of doses in all—long before regulatory approval is or is not granted. The winning vaccine could thus start to get to people quickly, even as doses of failed vaccines might be thrown away unused.

You ignored my NYT link lol.

PCR tests that cycle behind a threshold of 30 cycles yield what amounts to a false positive. It can be as high as 90%[!] of them. Are you anti-science? This means it would be a waste of time and effort to use contact tracing on every ‘positive’ COVID test.

Statistically, COVID threat to 18-25 year olds is minimal and probably on the same order as alcohol poisoning on campuses.

That actually happens.

Here is a piece that is only a couple of days old to educate you on why contact tracing will not work with were we are:

you idiot.
This is exactly what the world and Trump is doing!! Carp some more over "solutions"

So no links but just the one ...and that just speaks of a "suggestion"....nothing to what the president is willing to fund....thank you;)
I am retired...still teaching though....every day...just not for pay....;)
Hope school's going well in your local system..;)

Perhaps you could teach Walt that there is no school on Saturday...lol

We might have to give him a pass...but with 6 full time jobs, you would think he'd have an assistant or two to remind him....

This doesn't address the OP's point. The rate of deaths is declining but the overall total is still rising because, unlike in Europe, the disease though slowed keeps marching on in Trump country.

No it doesn't, Snowflake.

Are you against the rate of deaths declining?

$2 billion wasted on ventilators that were never needed

Yes, and you wasted $100 on smoke detectors you never needed.

The point is you want to save money by hoping for the best. I want to save money by preparing for the worst. Yes, if the best happens, I will have wasted some money. But if the worst happens, you will have wasted everything.

which it turned out should only be used as a last resort but these fuckers did not know that.

It was hard won knowledge gained by experts through hard work.

We need 10 or more to get a 90% chance of one working. 5 is much fewer than 10.

Or put another way, 80% of phase 3 clinical trials fail completely with normal vaccines, and many of these are novel vaccines and will have a much higher failure rate.

Maybe we will get lucky. But if we keep counting on getting lucky, sooner or later we will not get lucky. We need a president who does not count on luck.
