Have you ever tried to move your family without any money? Have you ever tried to leave your support system when you are broke? Even if the new place is better it can be impossable to get there.

Birmingham isn't quite the size of Atlanta but it is unquestionably a metropolitan area. And it is nothing like the rest of the state. No rednecks or pickup trucks there. Birmingham is 75% black. Literally.

As for all of you talking shit about the education here, I promise you that I went to a better public highschool in Alabama than any of you pricks.

In 2008, JCIB was named by Newsweek as an "Elite School," meaning that its average SAT and ACT scores showed that the school was too good to be included on the normal "Newsweek Top Public High Schools" list. The JCIB Class of 2008 obtained more than $11 million in scholarships.

Well your OWN argument for praising Liberal places is that they have good schooling and government support, while mine is that people live with lower taxes and less cost of living in Conservative areas.
So, IF people find it harder financially to move out of somewhere, it is far more likely to affect people in Liberal areas than Conservative areas, so your argument really plays against you and the imbalance would probably be even higher if all could move.

First of all, it should be obvious on the surface, something called "Gasparilla" is NOT "Mardi Gras" ...not even close! But when we examine further, we discover that Mobile's Mardi Gras is the oldest carnival in America, established in 1707. Gaspar, the pirate in which 'Gasparilla' is named (yes, it's a celebration of pirates) wasn't born until 1756. The Gasparilla Pirates Carnival in Tampa, was originated in 1904. Nearly 200 years AFTER Mobile's Mardis Gras.

BTW - whoever mentioned the Sonics leaving for Oklahomo, that had nothing to do with the market in Seattle. They got bought out, and no one bothered to mention that the buyer was planning to move the team.

Now I am just as sorry as I can be, but I really don't think anyone living today in Alabama is remotely responsible for that. If that is how your mind works, let's go back to ancient history and hold you personally accountable for what your ancestors did! I'm quite sure, they subjugated someone or oppresses some peoples at some time, don't you guess?

Not particularly. My dad is a Yankee and my mom lived in New York for most of her life so I don't have a pronounced Southern accent. Most people I meet think I'm from out of state but I've lived here my whole life. My parents were lawyers and didn't sound like redneck hicks, so as a consequent I don't.

Dunno about that - the Shoreline Public Schools are pretty good, and my graduating class sent three students to Yale. How many from your graduating class went to Yale?

Graduating class of 75 accrued $13 million in scholarship money.

38 went to Ivy League schools. No idea how many to Yale specifically but at least 2 of my friends.

So suck my Southern nuts.
