Can the country be unified?

Most people are mostly good

A few are like saints

A few are complete rat bastards

That is what your proff was saying

It’s true

It was developed in the human population

If it had not developed that way we would have flashed out of exsistance

We would have quickly killed each other

We still exist because we are a compassionate animal

The question, though, is why? I had a professor once who offered the best explanation I've heard. I'm not convinced, but it still resonates with me. He said that most humans have a natural impulse to want to be better, bigger, more. The easiest way to imagine those things is to admire them in another person. In countries that still have a monarchy, that admiration is often easily housed in the monarchy itself. In a country like the US, we construct our own royalties, including professional athletes, musical stars, etc. There will, however, always be a tendency to admire a strong man. Trump is the poor man's version of a rich man and the weak man's version of a strong man. He brags about his wealth and says anything he wants to say and physically pushes people around in rooms. Most of us sometimes worry about finances, respect social norms related to the things we say, and keep our hands to ourselves. We have to find a way to address these impulses before they make it all the way to fascism. As an aside, the same professor told me that the lottery exists to keep poor people from revolting. He was a really interesting guy and intensely disliked by a lot of the student body.

Even in our system the President is like a constitutional monarch. The modern problem is how to limit the power of the president without having to amend the Constitution.

Fascism is a specific perversion of democracy where the system does not have a way to force the president to conform.

I find that most people who talk casually about fascism and socialism and communism have no idea what they're talking about. You did a good job of explaining the basics. I find that visual aids also sometimes help.

the best way to show how similar they are is showing political ideology as a circle graph, rather than linear...with the extreme left being at the bottom of the circle on the left of center, next to the extreme right wing at the bottom of the circle, on the right of center. when you move clockwise around the circle starting at bottom center, you first go to communism, then about the middle of the left side, socialism, then at top center, no ideological political position, then middle right- religious or hereditary kingdoms, then down to fascism, nazis in general.

i think your professor was right about trump voters somehow believing this arrogant, loudmouth creampuff trump is a tough guy because he does not give a shit about anyone but himself, that he enjoys bullying those who are stupid or weak enough to let him bully them because of his dough or political power, and because he is rich (apparently) he must be better and smarter than they are for some reason.

Elections including mid term elections

Our system has been struggling for a couple of decades because republicans have been cheating in elections

Otherwise it works fine

DNC v RNC

Go research that decades long case

It proved the cheating of the Republican Party over and over again through decades

If you try to fix your car by pretending there is no water in your gas tank your car will never work huh

Well, 22 or 23% of the American population voted for Trump. Even more people than that like or support him. They are not compassionate people; and I don't think we can dismiss them. We have to do something about them and their grievances.

The system does not work. That is, the system works for the upper class and the oligarchy.

They have been lied to by fox and the Republican Party much of their lives

They are mostly fools and not evil

it is hard to change bigots and racists and sexists and fake christians. the right wing has always been plagued with such awful folks, but used to be, the GOP kept the crazies out of their party. but starting with nixon, then more with reagan, and all the way after obama was elected in 2008, the GOP invited the loons inside the tent and now they control the party.

I don't think the president's powers are the biggest problem; and I am convinced that the system will continue to crumble until it's finally destroyed in revolution unless we amend the Constitution. We need to eliminate the incentives for lifelong political office and remove the influence of money. We need to dismantle the two major political parties and start over. Also, no president in my lifetime has ever been as widely admired as an NFL MVP or a 15-time Grammy winner. Before Trump. The president is the head of state and the head of government, but he is not a monarch. Trump activated the fascistic tendencies in his supporters. My point is that we should be able to find another outlet for those tendencies besides electing a fascist.
