Representative Matt Gaetz, Republican of Florida and a close ally of former President Donald J. Trump, is being investigated by the Justice Department over whether he had a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old and paid for her to travel with him, according to three people briefed on the matter.

Investigators are examining whether Mr. Gaetz violated federal sex trafficking laws, the people said. A variety of federal statutes make it illegal to induce someone under 18 to travel over state lines to engage in sex in exchange for money or something of value. The Justice Department regularly prosecutes such cases, and offenders often receive severe sentences.

Based on the article is sounds like it doesn't matter what the age of consent is in any particular state if he took her across state lines for sex and she is below 18.

I agree.

They know who the girl is- and it shouldn't be hard to prove her age. What is a little strange is the fact that the investigation started several months ago during the Barr version of the Justice department!

I remember when Chuck Berry allowed some homeless teen girl on his tour bus because she needed a ride to Memphis, and the legal authorities entrapped him for the same charge and he had to go to prison for almost a decade. It was never established if the girl had sex with him or any of the other musicians on the tour bus, but they busted him for transporting a minor across state lines.

I always thought he was weird even before I knew about this. And check this out: "Rep.
