White House fires back at Bush comments: 'We won'
Posted: 06:39 PM ET

From CNN Associate Producer Martina Stewart

WASHINGTON (CNN) – A day after former President George W. Bush seemed to criticize the Obama administration for departing from a number of his anti-terrorism policies, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs fired back.

Asked about Bush's remarks during Thursday's press briefing Gibbs had a simple response. "We won," Gibbs told reporters.

In a vigorous defense of his own national security policies during a speech in Pennsylvania Wednesday, Bush appeared to take issue with the new administration's early decision to close the detention center in Guantanamo Bay and ban the use of aggressive interrogation techniques.

"I told you I'm not going to criticize my successor," Bush said, according to a report by the Washington Times. "I'll just tell you that there are people at Gitmo that will kill American people at a drop of a hat and I don't believe that persuasion isn't going to work. Therapy isn't going to cause terrorists to change their mind."

Gibbs said Thursday that the American people had made their own decision about battling terror.

"I think we've had a debate about individual policies. We had that debate in particular – we kept score last November and we won," Gibbs said.

Gibbs also responded Thursday to the former president's remarks that appeared to be directed at the Obama administration's unprecedented involvement in the private sector in the middle of the financial and economic crisis that began last fall at the end of Bush's tenure.

"President Obama believes that the free market is what governs our economic principles, and looks forward to getting out of the business of being involved in banks and in auto companies," Gibbs said.

Bush was the one, who asked for and signed for the TARP money!
Bush doubled the national debt, from 5 trillion to over 10 trillion dollars!

Yeah, Bush is a classy guy. Speaking of the ND, Obama's policies will put us into bankrupcy.

the bailout is due to republican led policies over the past 15 yrs or so.
We have been working towards bankruptcy for quite a while.
The stock market and housing prices are now about where they really should be.
We need real growth not bogus speculative bubble growth.
But that may not be possible due to the amount of manufacturing that has left the USA.

Why doesn't the little dope just go clear some more dead wood off his "ranch" and leave the rest of us alone? Don't we have enough with Dead Eye Dick Cheney running around telling us Obama will get us all killed?

LOL

The libtards are upset that President Bush questioned the stupidity of the one. How many billions of dollars are we going to have to pay to some 3rd world country to take the terrorists from Gitmo? We all saw his response to Iran, I am surprised he can even walk without a spine.

Why not? Wingnuts like you walk around all the time with out a brain.

And the response on Iran should have been...?

This should be good...

I have never realised that full extent of your self delusion but saying Bush is classy is just bonkers.

Bush WAS classy, insofar as attempting to respect the forward machinations of the Obama administration. It wasn't until the new admin got out of hand trying to lay all of the mounting mistakes they were making on the heels of the outgoing admin that he ceased needing to be classy.

Both Bush & Cheney lost their right to ever lecture anyone again - ever - on what is & isn't smart foreign policy & national security.

Act.

That's about the gist of the argument. The neocon jackasses want Obama to "act" but refuse to say what exactly he ought to do and why.
I heard Ambassador Bolton talking about this. He said quite a few direct statements about what should have been done.

He believed that Obama should have made it clear that he believed the unelected power to be corrupt and illegitimate, and that we should work to arm students, etc. that want to throw out the current religious government.

But then he is a "Neocon" so that couldn't really be what he said, because nobody is supposed to give direct opinions...

Personally I think just standing back and watching is the best action right now, and it is very likely what Bush would have done too, although he would have mentioned their status in the "Axis of Evil".

Bolton and the neocons would be better of leaving it at "act" with that fucking insanity.

Splendid idea. Just what we need over there; giving the region yet another example of America intervening in their gov't & politics...

To Onceler and Dungheap what would you like see happen from Obama and the U.S.?

Pretty much what Obama is doing. Stay out of it. Express support for basic human rights, freedom of speech, the right to peacefully demonstrate and support for the democratic process. That's it. Unless the United States is willing to back up its support for the opposition with military force (and it isn't) the United States shouldn't state its support for the Iranian opposition.

Moreover, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that the Iranian leadership's accusations of U.S. meddling are designed to undermine support for the opposition. No need to assist current leadership by proving them right and actively supporting the opposition.

Paul Krugman, writing in August of 2002:

To fight this recession the Fed needs more than a snapback; it needs soaring household spending to offset moribund business investment. And to do that, as Paul McCulley of Pimco put it, Alan Greenspan needs to create a housing bubble to replace the Nasdaq bubble.

Thanks to a this comment for the pointer.
Prophetic. You have to give him that.

As for Gitmo, Congress has a few things to say about that:

Congress passes restrictions on detainees

By LARRY MARGASAK
Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Legislation to pay for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan this year is on its way to President Barack Obama, but it provides no money for closing the Guantanamo detainee prison and sets tough restrictions on the transfer of its inmates.

The $106 billion emergency war bill is not all for war fighting. It includes many unrelated items, including a "cash for clunkers" incentive to swap gas guzzlers for more fuel-efficient vehicles; and funds for UN peacekeeping, air service to rural communities, Gulf Coast housing for hurricane victims and the response to a flu pandemic.

Lawmakers sent Obama, who wants to close the prison, not one but two messages Thursday to prove they don't like the idea.

In addition to the war fighting bill, which received final congressional approval, the House used the first spending bill for 2010 to deny the president money to close the prison next year. The legislation funds law enforcement and science programs.

Many lawmakers are upset at the possibility that alleged terrorists could end up in their states or districts....
