The United States will scrap a ridiculous Bush-era plan to build a missile defense shield in Eastern Europe.

The Defense budget is incredibly bloated.

Placing unnecessary weaponry on foreign soil should never have been considered.

Anyone who seriously believes Iran to be a threat (more of a threat than our budget at least) needs a good check on reality.

Reaction was 100% positive. Russian President Medvedev congratulated President Obama, saying "We value the U.S. president's responsible approach toward implementing our agreements. I am ready to continue the dialogue."
 
do you have a link that federal spending will be reduced because of this? last i read, they were replacing the system with something else....
 
The U.N. nuclear watchdog agency said today it has no evidence that Iran has an atomic bomb program, dismissing \false news reports that it claimed Iran was producing nuclear weapons.

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak was quoted saying he does not view Iran as a threat to the existence of the Jewish state.

German Foreign Minister Steinmeier said "I have stressed from the outset, in the end we need more and not less collective security. The Obama administration's move today is a signal to all partners that the American government aspires to such common solutions. That is the right way."

The Government Accountability Office just released a report calling for better oversight of missile defense programs.

In its Sept. 16 report for the House of Representatives’ Armed Services Committee, GAO states that the Pentagon has not taken a comprehensive view at the needs of costly missile programs.

The report notes "Without a full assessment of its overall requirements, DOD lacks the information it needs to make the best possible policy, strategy and budgetary decisions for ballistic missile defense."

The. Missile Defense Agency will get $7.8 billion in funding for fiscal 2010, down from the $9 billion it received in fiscal 2009. The agency has averaged $8.35 billion in funding annually since 2002.

VIENNA — Iran experts at the U.N nuclear monitoring agency believe Tehran has the ability to make a nuclear bomb and worked on developing a missile system that can carry an atomic warhead, according to a confidential report seen by The Associated Press.

The document drafted by senior officials at the International Atomic Energy Agency is the clearest indication yet that those officials share Washington's views on Iran's weapon-making capabilities and missile technology — even if they have not made those views public.

The document, titled "Possible Military Dimension of Iran's Nuclear Program," appeared to be the so-called IAEA "secret annex" on Iran's alleged nuclear arms program that the U.S., France, Israel and other IAEA members say is being withheld by agency chief Mohamed ElBaradei — claims the nuclear watchdog denies.

It is a record of IAEA findings since the agency began probing Iran's nuclear program in 2007 and has been continuously updated.

The information in the document that is either new, more detailed or represents a more forthright conclusion than found in published IAEA reports includes:
_ The IAEA's assessment that Iran worked on developing a chamber inside a ballistic missile capable of housing a warhead payload "that is quite likely to be nuclear."

_ That Iran engaged in "probable testing" of explosives commonly used to detonate a nuclear warhead — a method known as a "full-scale hemispherical explosively driven shock system."

_ An assessment that Iran worked on developing a system "for initiating a hemispherical high explosive charge" of the kind used to help spark a nuclear blast.

In another key finding, an excerpt notes: "The agency ... assesses that Iran has sufficient information to be able to design and produce a workable implosion nuclear device (an atomic bomb) based on HEU (highly enriched uranium) as the fission fuel."

The International Atomic Energy Agency rejected a US media report which claimed its experts believed Tehran had the ability to make a nuclear bomb and was on the way to developing a missile system able to carry an atomic warhead.
"With respect to a recent media report, the IAEA reiterates that it has no concrete proof that there is or has been a nuclear weapon programme in Iran," a statement said.
According to the media report, the proof was contained in a so-called "secret annex" to the IAEA's latest report on Iran, but was deliberately being withheld by the agency's director general Mohamed ElBaradei.
"At the board of governors meeting on September 9, Director General ElBaradei warned that continuing allegations that the IAEA was withholding information on Iran are politically motivated and totally baseless," it said.

I haven't seen so many weasel words in one place since the reports just prior to the Iraq war....

The IAEA received information from a variety of sources that might be relevant to verifying that a state was not hiding nuclear bomb research or development, it said.

The IAEA is investigating what it calls credible Western intelligence material suggesting Iran in the past researched ways of revamping the cone of a Shabab 3 missile to fit a nuclear warhead.
