My hope is- as ever- for a swift Ukrainian capitulation to save lives and cities. This is based upon my belief that the Russians will use tactical nukes rather than lose any territory gained.

They haven't spent all that time, effort and money developing a nuclear deterrent just to polish it and air it on May Day. Anybody thinking that they won't is a dumbass.
The US did- the Russians would. So would every other nuclear weapons state.

Let's not forget that this isn't "the Russians", it's Putin. Ms. Moon reveres Putin as a hero and great leader but, like her, he's batshit crazy.

Direct answer: yes, I think Putin is crazy enough to order a tactical nuke strike.

In the US, the office of the President is an institution. This is why the SS didn't follow Trump's orders to assault the Capital for his coup. This is why Obama couldn't leave the WH driveway in Seinfeld's "Comedians in Cars getting Coffee".

Here's the question: Is the Russian government strong enough to resist the orders of a nutjob?

I accept your tacit confession that you were excited for what you thought would be a quick Russian victory on February 25, Colonel Moon.

I never wrote, suggested, or even remotely insinuated the Russians would be stopped at the border.

I only suggested the Ukrainians would not be that easy to beat.

For the past 30 years the Russians have been fighting Chechen militias, Georgians, and Syrian rebels.

They haven't gone up against a large, modern, well equiped army in 75 years. And it shows.

Which is why when you and Field Marshall Hawkeye were doing a premature victory dance, I was still expecting the Ukrainians to mount a tenacious defense and inflict substantial pain on the Russian army.
