Putin planned this invasion years ago, and has had designs on Ukraine for three decades.

Putin has openly declared that Ukraine is an illegitimate country, and it belongs to Russia because of the 1654 Pereyaslav agreement. He hasn't even tried to hide his imperialist agenda.

I already gave you an example from 1988, the Soviet defeat in Afghanistan.

How many examples do you need? The North Vietnamese defeated us in 1973, never having set foot on American soil. We defeated Iraq in 1991 even though we never drove onto to Baghdad or occupied their country. Argentina backed down to Great Britain in 1982, even though not one British soldier set foot on Argentinian soil. The Algerians defeated the French in the 1960s without ever having occupied a square inch of France. We defeated Spain in 1898 without ever having occupied a square millimeter of Spain.

I have no idea what point you are trying to make......unlike Iraq, Argentina, or Algeria,I doubt we could fight Russian troops in Ukraine and not have to fight in Russia......

You are trying to retroactively modify, edit, change the point you wrote in the original post. I can only respond to the words you type. You didn't say there was a possibility NATO might have to bomb a naval base at Rostov-on-Don, or that we might blow up a supply depot across the border in Belgorod.

You suggested we would have to occupy the nation of Russia, and nation-build there for 20 years.

why after all these years of Putin making that same speech ( he started the "Russian Imperium" noise around 2002) did he suddenly decide to invade?

Because he saw Biden come in -after being unable to negotiate with Trump because of the Russian Hoax-
and knew Biden Inc has a bunch of neocons like Nuland and Rice and Sullivan in power.
So obviously Ukraine was going to get it's NATO status, but in the meantime Ukraine was getting lots of offensive weapons. Not to mention the basic rejection of his redlines

Meaning his window to deal with Ukraine was closing, neutrality was out of the question since the Maidan
and he did what he had to do to neutralize NATO expansion into Ukraine

Finland already had a robust defense, and Sweden isn't even on the radar.
Those becoming NATO arent a big deal to Russia like Ukraine is

Ukraine is strategicially important to Russia, it's east is Russian by all measures
so it was now or never -unless he could see some diplomatic progress ( the Lavrov letters) -
and they were blown off by Biden

I have. I understand the predicate, but the invasion has had terrible effects on civilians.
I've said many times i'd be fine with annexing Donbas. but not this invasion west of the Dnieper

Because Taiwan is a keystone to the western Pacific archipelago, and we have strategic interests in Taiwan

Ukraine can go full Russian and it makes no difference to the USA -nothing there is in our interest to war over
