Only 20% of Americans identify themselves as Republicans

identify.

A) this does not equate to who the public will vote for. Someone may not identify as a republican, but may still prefer a republican than a democrat in some circumstances

B) This does not take into account the rate that those that may identify themselves as democrat may vote at. There could hypothetically be less self identified republicans, but those that do may vote more than self identified democrats, shifting the numbers in republicans favor.

When talking about the "death of a party" these are important indicators to take into account. What are the voting inclinations of likely voters? That's pretty important when we are actually discussing elections.

I'm not saying which way it is, I am just pointing out that this poll doesn't really tell us much of anything in as so far as how electoral politics are trending.

I'd agree with much of that, but polls are snapshots .. and if the snapshot illustrates that republicans are still losing identity, then it is republicans themselves who best take notice.

Polls are important to strategists.

What claim did I make other then you resp;onse is what would be expected of someone who votes republican. I was unawre that you had ever voted for a democrat, although I did think you to be a self-described republican.

If I'm mistaken I apologize.

I try real hard to maintain a civil respect between us.

That being said, you won't find me arguing about polls unless they're fraudulently conducted .. which usually comes out by analyzing patterns.

you assumed about me and i assumed about you....

buds again :clink:

DUH

The Republican party isn't dead. Explicit support is low, but the two-party nature of our system allows the other party to go to dead levels of support but go zombie when it finds some issue to latch on to. If the Republicans didn't die in the 30's their not going to die now. Despite trying to latch on to health care, the Republicans haven't been successful, and it hasn't gotten them very far. They've been able to manipulate the Democrats like hell from the minority because the Democrats are much weaker and less coherent than the Republicans.

what are you going to say or do when republicans gain many, if not, the majority seats in 2010?

i don't think this poll is fraudulent, I just don't think we can draw the conclusion that the republican party is dead from this specific data

I've been saying the Republicans are following the footsteps of the Whigs since before Obama was elected .. and surprise, surprise, like the Whigs, they're reducing themselves to a party of extremists.

That puts Americans in a pickle because nobody wants to see one party in charge of everything, including me. There was enough of that during the Bush years. But the Democratic Party is too weak to lead alone.

Much of our system of governance is failing all around us.

ok....so you don't want one party....who is this other party you want?

the other thing is, minor as a caveat it may be, is that there are many embarrassed republicans right now, that may not want to readily admit what they actually are. I have a lot of republican friends that if approached on the street would straight up lie about their political affiliation.

The Republican Party.

It's the only party that has the power to move democrats.

But America needs a sane Republican Party that engages in real issues and opens it doors to a changing America.

I still believe in and support and vote for third parties .. but as a realist, power to them will not come soon.

The Republicans and Democrats score like 40% on a generic congressional ballot. I would be very surprised if the Democrats didn't get more the 50% of the congressional votes and the Republicans at least 45%. There seems to just be something about our system that encourages people to vote for the two parties although not explicitly support them - to a degree that's pretty much unseen in any other democracy.

What is that thing staring at me when I read your posts?

I'm not saying that I'm scared of it or anything .. but it's creeping me out.

:0)

HEY .. I just noticed something ..

"Liberal Socialist"

... very cool.

Also, because of gerrymandering patterns that favor Republicans, a 48%-50 % raw vote in the house favoring the Democrats would probably result in a Republican majority. The closest analogue to this would be the 98 elections - the Democrats barely won the most votes, but the Republicans maintained a large lead in seats. It wasn't outrageous because the votes were very close, but the Democrats come into any election crippled in the house and massively crippled in the senate.

interesting....i would say the same about democrats.....america also needs a sane democrat party than engages in real issues instead of waging war against a news channel....

Hardly a war.

They simply called Fox out for what it is.

No downside to that.

I just like to throw together as many things that right-wingers hate as possible and call it my political ideology.

If you classified my political ideology you'd probably call it social liberalism - which is a liberal reaction to socialism which attempts to address some of the problems which became apparent in a liberal capitalist society. Obviously, in doing so it adopts some socialist approaches. So you could call it liberal socialism if you were just looking to piss people off and remain as unelectable as possible.

translation: my ideology is one of hate and i can't think for myself, so i let republicans think for me

you're a radical, fundamentalist that needs to be killed

the statistic currently the most important....100% of Americans are in trouble because liberals control Congress and the White House.....
