The CEO of the fast-growing electric vehicle company Rivian Automotive has shared some strong statements about purchasing a car with an internal-combustion engine (ICE).
In conversation with Robinson Meyer of Heatmap, Rivian CEO R.J. Scaringe suggested that those buying an ICE vehicle would be ignoring the progress being made in the EV space and would soon experience regret for their decision.*
“I think the reality of buying a combustion-powered vehicle … is sort of like building a horse barn in 1910,” he said. “Imagine buying a Chevy Suburban in 2030 … what are you going to do with that … in 10 years?”
“Gas stations will be slowly disappearing,” he added. “It’s just weird.”
With shifts in consumer attitudes, positive policy decisions regarding EVs worldwide, and improved drivability, Scaringe told Heatmap that the increased interest and uptake in EVs is “awesome to see.”*
“If you’d told me just a few years ago,” Scaringe went on, “that Europe would be committing to 100% of new vehicles being electric … that California would be making that commitment in the same way, that the United States, through EPA regulations, is going to be 60% EV of new sales by 2030, I don’t think I would have believed it.”

No, they'll grow more expensive as the use of the materials they're made of increase. Lithium, nickel, copper, are all going to go up, not down in price. This is particularly true in Western nations where greentard movements on the Left fight tooth and nail to stop all mining and resource extraction. The same goes for electrical power. If wind and solar continue to increase in share of the market, expect electricity prices to triple, possibly quadruple.

The air is far cleaner today than it was 50 years ago. I'm willing to trade some pollution for a modern society and its conveniences.

Terry's looking at old data. The best marketing is word-of-mouth. As people see their neighbors, co-workers and family with EVs, those doubters will warm up to the idea. The cat is out of the bag. There's no going back. EVs will eventually dominate the roadways.
Probably sooner than any of us realize.

Yes, there is. Bearings have lubricant in them. Plastics are made from oil. Ethylene glycol, the coolant used in the battery pack is made from oil. The tires the vehicle rolls on use oil in the rubber manufacturing process.

We have a 2004 Chevy Tahoe, a 2004 GMC Sierra pickup 4WD, a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado pickup 4WD, a 2012 GMC Yukon and a 2020 Chevy Tahoe. Four out of five ain’t bad. Of course we bought them when they were newer. ;)

I find it strange that somebody would have five vehicles and they're all work type or utility vehicles.

Five cars and no formal sedan.
Five cars and no little roadster.

It's cool to have five cars, but those five all together do seem strange.
Maybe not in Oklahoma.

Anyway, there's still the part about people my age not having to worry about ten years down the road.:)

I didn't realize acceleration from 0-60 had that much to do with transit time from shipper to receiver


The diesel-powered trucks can not go 0-60 in 20 seconds, but they can travel over 1,200 miles,,, That's more than double the Tesla's range, before needing to refuel.

If the statistics in volsrock's signature are actually true,

and we have a serious crime problem with our citizens of African descent,

Maybe our black brothers and sisters haven't gotten over it yet.

I want to see Tesla's truck do transcontinental team driving. This is where a crew of two or three drivers take turns driving non-stop from say, the port of Los Angeles to the port in Jacksonville Florida. That's roughly a 3000 mile one-way trip and the truck never stops moving, carrying enough fuel for the entire trip onboard.

Africans had practiced slavery for hundreds of years before white people got there with ships

It is weird, I know. We drive trucks or larger SUVs here because of the roads. No cars allowed where I live. 3 miles up the county road people have cars, but I live off the beaten path. We have one extra vehicle now. It’s a long story and I’ll spare you. I will likely put the ‘09 Silverado up for sale in October. Which will put is back to 4 vehicles. I keep the ‘04 Tahoe in tip top shape and use it for a spare. It has 250K miles on it.

Edit: And the part about ten years down the road… Don’t sell yourself short. You may end up being like dad. Nearly 93 and still driving his pickup around going pretty much wherever he wants to when he wants to. Still enjoys going to a good restaurant and all sorts of other things. He Face Timed his granddaughter tonight so she could tell him he was going to be great grandpa again. He said he didn’t care whether it was a boy or girl but she’d better bring him/her around so he could take him/her fishing.

Unlike gasoline cars, Tesla vehicles require no traditional oil changes, fuel filters, spark plug replacements or emission checks. Even brake pad replacements are rare because regenerative braking returns energy to the battery, significantly reducing wear on the brakes.


Electric cars use completely different drivetrains, so you will never have to worry about routine oil changes that are necessary for traditional cars. Though your electric car does not need oil, it requires a routine check on these 3 fluids in EVs; coolant, brake fluid, and windshield washing fluid.

Electric cars are almost ready, it would seem.
Charging issues must still be resolved, though.

It also remains to be seen if charging stations suddenly pop up as quickly
as cell phone towers did a generation or so ago.

And they have to get rid of those head restraints so gentlemen can wear a proper hat.
