Babyboomers become homeless

So you are a follower of Mussolini.

State control of business' with private ownership to provide some profit incentive.

The system you promote is simply called "fascism."

You are a follower of Trump and Goebbels. You want to destroy anyone to the left of your own far right ideology. You are an abusive authoritarian asshole. If you were in the US, I'd hope the FBI was monitoring you.

How exactly does it "distort the market?"

It essentially keeps rates artificially low. Therefore people who have lived in their homes for a long time are not incentivized to move, even if they want to, because of the step up in their tax basis. (this is they desire purchasing another house - if they are going to rent then it doesn't come into play).

I admit it's a(n) (ideological) conundrum for me as I support lower taxes. But both Prop 13 and NIMBYism have been major drivers in the outrageous housing prices in California.

1. It was Earl's link. Tell him, Tiny Dick.
2. Agreed in part; Congress has allowed the rich to rape the market.
3. Like the other idiots, you're a "all or none" moron. Sane, intelligent and educated people know there is a middle-ground of common sense.

There is no 'raping of the market', Sock. The LAST thing YOU want is common sense.

Typical Down Under dumbass doesn't realize that there are Capitalist alternatives to Voodoo Economics which are not Totalitarian Socialism.

Is it really any wonder why so many Aussie girls want to come to the USA?

There is capitalism, or there is socialism, Sock. It is one or the other. There is nothing 'voodoo' about capitalism.

Across the political spectrum, almost all Americans want to get homeless people jobs. There are countries willing to support the poor who refuse to work, but America is not one of them.

America IS one of them, thanks to the socialism by the 'federal' government and by city governments.

Many of them have jobs. Now we have to figure out a way to get them homes. Maybe a living wage would help... And we are back at minimum wage.

No. Most of them do not have jobs, nor do they want one. Kinda hard to get a job when you're strung out on drugs.

Opinions are mixed on whether getting the mentally ill jobs is good for them, but I tend to think it is good for them. It is not easy to get them jobs, but with work by all parties, many times it is possible.

I am hearing a lot people claim to be "retired" lately when they do not want to put in the work. I am not complaining about it as a joke, but it can go to far.

I am all for the government helping people out, especially those in real need. Many times the way to help them is by helping them get a job, and making sure that job pays a livable amount. I also strongly support helping them get a job, and then just having the government top them up to a livable amount. Even just giving them money up front to get to the point they can get a job makes sense to me.

In some circumstances we need to just support them and accept they will never get a job.

Why do you support communism?

Reagan was Governor of California, and spent almost his entire adult life as a resident of California. He absolutely hated leaving California, so is in fact buried just outside Los Angeles, California.

Reagan also pushed the concept of individual retirement accounts, which made Americans far more individually responsible for their retirements. Some retirees have benefited greatly from this, but others have had a hard time of it.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! You idiots ACTUALLY THINK REAGAN'S BODY IS POLITICALLY ACTIVE IN CALIFORNIA!!!!!!

This is not something you either believe or do not believe. While the 401k did come about in 1978(before Reagan), it was not pushed until the Reagan Presidency. The IRA was invented in 1982. The 1980's is when you start seeing pensions completely disappear.

Social Security still exists, but if you want anything beyond that, you have to do it yourself. It has not always been that way, but it is that way now. There are a few fields that are exceptions, but even they are disappearing.

Actually, the government returns more money to Social Security recipients than it took from them. Not a small fraction, as you claim. More importantly private pensions were sometimes insured by the government, but were rarely government "confiscations", or even government controlled.

Who would have a problem with individual pensions? That is a simple answer. Anyone who does not have a lot of money in them. This could be caused by not putting money in, not investing well, or just bad luck.

Before you ask, I am VERY HAPPY with my individual retirement accounts.

The government does not 'return' your social security taxes at all. There is no 'lockbox'.
Why do you support communism?

Then don't whine about the effects of it. If retired people cannot afford homes, just say you do not care, and move on.

Seriously.

Now you are asking for the government to take my money to buy someone else a home???? Why do you support communism?

Three examples? I'm too lazy. I'll do one.

Pharmaceuticals!

Capitalism: A company will mass produce a life-saving drug cheaply and then sell it at an extreme markup. Profits baby!
Example?
Socialism: The government will finance and control the drug industry.
Which is communism, a form of socialism.
Socialist capitalism: A company will mass produce a life-saving drug cheaply and then sell it at a reasonable price determined by the government (with "reasonable price" being determined as one that allows a company to make profits while also being affordable to the public).
Which is fascism, a form of socialism. There is no capitalism.

How exactly does it "distort the market?"

Prop 13 reduces incentive to sell, since as long as you don't sell, you get lower taxes. This reduces velocity in the real estate market by a lot. Therefore a lot more homes get built, causing sprawl and higher prices, particularly in NIMBY cases putting roadblocks in front of those building homes. The overall effect is higher prices and lower velocity.
