Speaker of the House - ”we don’t live in a democracy.”

Alexander Hamilton said we are a representative democracy.

https://founders.archives.gov/documents/Hamilton/01-05-02-0012-0060
III. Democracy in my sense, where the whole power of the government in the people
I. Whether exercised by themselves, or
2. By their representatives chosen by them either mediately or immediately and legally accountable to them.
IV. Aristocracy where whole sovereignty is permanently in the hands of a few for life or hereditary
V. Monarchy where the whole sovereignty is in the hands of one man for life or hereditary.
VI. Mixed government when these three principles unite.
B.
I. Consequence, the proposed government a representative democracy.

...

This representative democracy as far as is consistent with its genius has all the features of good government.

Ben Franklin said we are a republic, if we can keep it.

it is obvious your understanding of civics is limited to grade school material.

That the United States is a "constitutional republic" governed through "representative democracy" IS grade school material. Sad so many of you people seem never to have learned it.

p.s. Maybe I should have qualified that for the um, level of grade school you may have experienced. Sorry.

Great article on an issue we discussed a few weeks ago.

Why Republicans are trying to convince Americans we are not a Democracy.

As I discussed here, they are not a major party and Democracy does not work for them anymore, so pretend its not an American value of that we were not founded on Democratic principal's.

Justify your biblical rule by diminishing Democracy.

Abandoning Democracy is what the Republican party has come to.

It's rather scary to realize that we have a speaker of the house who claims to be a "constitutional attorney," whatever the f that is, yet who blatantly did everything legally possible to violate that document in order to get his #MalignantMessiah appointed dictator.

I mean, we can start pulling out quotes from former Republican heroes like Reagan who talked about America as a democracy all of the time.

They've moved so far away from those days. Like the OP said: the idea of democracy doesn't work for the GOP anymore.

Reagan would be considered a RINO these days, and primaried.

we are NOT a democratic republic. If we were, the majority could overrule the rights of the minority. This is why the US is a CONSTITUTIONAL REPUBLIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What the hell are you talking about

Republic implies the governmental structure we have, that’s all, the way our government is set up. Democracy is how we arrive at representation in that Republic, the citizenry votes democratically, ergo, we are a Democratic Republic

In Bangladesh people don’t vote, and they have a constitution, call themselves a Republic, you saying we are the same as Bangladesh?

no, we are a CONSTITUTIONAL republic, otherwise, why would we have a Constitution????? we are NOT a democratic republic because the voters are NOT the determiners of policy

my “ Vehicle” is a “car”, it’s also a “BMW”.

You see how that works? The United States is a democracy, it’s also a republic, it also has a constitution.

it is less precise. we are a constitutional republic

Precise and incomplete, Russia and China, for example, also being constitutional republics. Something makes our republic different from theirs, yes? What do you think it is?
