He had told people he was considering a mass shooting. The military division he was in knew of his mental problems. The police know of his issues....

Did he have an absolute right to bear arms?

Did he have an absolute right to bear arms?

Prior to his doing what he did what did he do to justify suspending his right to own one?

Its my understanding that he expressed a desire to commit a mass shooting. He said he was having uncontrollable feeling that were encouraging mass murder.

Is there an absolute right to bear arms?

that is a decision for the citizens of the state of Maine to decide the threshold for when his rights can be restricted. absolutes are always wrong :-)

So the "right to bear arms shall not be abridged" means that in some situations it can be abridged?

it's mystifying how I have to keep lecturing you about absolute rights and how the 5th Amendment works in conjunction with absolute rights.........

For the record, I believe rights can be limited if Due Process is first granted, but that means the right is not absolute.

I also believe that rights must be balanced when they conflict.

the right of the people plural shall not be abridged - yes

individuals can have rights restricted so long as we follow due process against said individual.

otherwise prisoners in jail would be packing

That guy should have been held in a State Mental Hospital without access to any kind of weapons.

Government failed to keep him out of society, that's on them.

Before he went crazy he was allowed to have guns, the government turning him loose on society after him saying the things he did is their fault.

It seems like there were so many warnings w/ this guy.

It's really a textbook case for where it's appropriate to limit the right to own a gun.

Who cares what you understand? What did he DO?

Yes unless you DO something to warrant having it suspended
