I would like to give credit where credit is due.

After stern warnings from the Republican leadership and a serious talking to... the Republican membership was very very well behaved last night.

I did not hear any booing or shouting or calling the president names.

Gold stars for the Republican membership! They get a "much improved" award!

all the while, the dem party and the president himself get failing grades for calling out the USSC and throwing them under the bus for doing their job.

thumbs down, dems.

The president is not allowed to disagree with the USSC?
That is the first time in our history that a President has disrespected the SCOTUS in a State of the Union address.

He should have relied on good advice regarding his speech. His wording is flawed and completely out of place.

The law that was reversed is only 7 years old...not a century!

The ruling does not do as he claimed.

Obama will suffer for this utter stupidity.

LOL... It will be interesting to see how the Ds react when next a republican is giving the speech.

of course. any branch is allowed to disagree with any other branch. The SOTU address is neither the time or place, and the manner in which it was done is certainly shameful and tarnishes the office of POTUS.

I disagree that the words President Obama used were shameful or tarnished the office of the POTUS.

I may be wrong but I never heard a Democrat shout derogatory comments at the president during the SOTU in the past....

Have you heard a President speak out against a Supreme Court ruling in the past during the SOTU?

Never, not even the other night. I have heard them say what they belive the result of a ruling will be....

From the 1988 SOTU address... Just after a school prayer decision was anounced by the S.Ct.

And let me add here: So many of our greatest statesmen have reminded us that spiritual values alone are essential to our nation's health and vigor. The Congress opens its proceedings each day, as does the Supreme Court, with an acknowledgment of the Supreme Being. Yet we are denied the right to set aside in our schools a moment each day for those who wish to pray. I believe Congress should pass our school prayer amendment.

Reagan again!!! (addressing the S.Ct. members seated directly in front of him)

"And while I'm on this subject, each day your Members observe a 200-year-old tradition meant to signify America is one nation under God. I must ask: If you can begin your day with a member of the clergy standing right here leading you in prayer, then why can't freedom to acknowledge God be enjoyed again by children in every schoolroom across this land?"

from the 1922 SOTU speech...

Closely related to this problem of education is the abolition of child labor. Twice Congress has attempted the correction of the evils incident to child employment. The decision of the Supreme Court has put this problem outside the proper domain of Federal regulation until the Constitution is so amended as to give the Congress indubitable authority. I recommend the submission of such an amendment.

IN the last 15 min's Ive found three historical examples of Presidents critizing the S.Ct. during the State of the Union Address.

Was it okay when Ronald Reagan did it?
