10,000 kinds of bullshit. He could deploy the Guard anywhere he chose to.
The DC Guard is at his DIRECT DISPOSAL. About 3,500 of them. He did not call them up, either. The Insurrection Act gives him the authority to call up ANY unit. But, he would have to admit it was an insurrection, wouldn’t he.
The procedure for mustering up any guard unit takes about one or two phone calls to a governor or NG commander. Just mere minutes, not 3 1/2 hours. Or, in this case, EVER.
Outside of the MP battalion, there's a quartermaster truck company (truck drivers), a maintenance company (fixes the vehicles), an aviation maintenance company and two aviation air evac (medical) helicopter companies. Other than that, there are administrative and training units along with a headquarters (paper pushers and management). None of them get "riot training" in their weekend a month, two-weeks a year. They learn the jobs the unit does and those aren't handling riots, it's doing paperwork, fixing equipment or driving equipment. The medical unit has a portion of civilian medical professionals that perform those services in uniform.
And, no, Trump cannot just send the National Guard to the Capitol.
