After offering buyouts to air traffic controllers, Trump administration says they’re exempt from ‘early retirement’ following deadly plane crashes

  • Air traffic controllers are exempt from a buyout offer President Trump’s administration introduced last week to nearly 2 million federal workers, including controllers. The clarification follows two deadly plane crashes, which renewed fears of the impact of air traffic controller shortages on aviation safety.
President Donald Trump’s administration is exempting air traffic controllers from government buyouts that were offered to millions of federal employees as a financial incentive to quit.

Last week, President Donald Trump signed an executive order granting nearly 2 million civil servants the ability to resign from their positions in exchange for eight months of severance pay. It is part of a sweeping effort to slash the size of the federal government in hopes of a bureaucratic overhaul.

The buyout offers came one day before an American Airlines flight collided with a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter just outside Washington, D.C.’s Ronald Reagan National Airport, killing 67 people. The same week, a medical transport jet crashed into a busy intersection in northeast Philadelphia, resulting in seven deaths and 19 injured—and making the three-day span the deadliest in U.S. aviation since 2001.

While the buyout offer was initially sent to air traffic controllers, along with other Federal Aviation Administration employees, an official with the Office of Personnel Management told the Associated Press on Friday that controllers are not eligible for the offer. An OPM spokesperson told Fortune air traffic controllers were exempt from the buyout, even before the administration’s clarification.

And on Monday, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy told CNN “the critical positions in regard to safety” are not given the buyout option. According to an updated fact sheet from the Office of Personnel Management, federal employees in “positions related to public safety and those in other positions specifically excluded by your employing agency” are exempt.

“We’re going to keep all our safety positions in place, no early retirement,” Duffy said. “We’re all going to stay and work and make sure our skies are safe.”

trump made a promise. If you stop showing up to work, and quit in 7 months, he will make sure you keep your job for 7 months. After people agreed to his terms, he rescinded the promise to some of them. How does anyone know he will not rescind the promise to others?

You cannot make a deal with trump. he is not an honest negotiator.

Since Congress didn't authorize this, Trump could easily rescind the deal the day after they resign. Agreed Donald J. Trump is dishonest. He's not to be trusted. Elon Musk is nuts.

Are you really THAT fucking stupid? That was a rhetorical question. :palm:

Irony from a Kamala voter. I bet you're brainless enough to believe that Biden was an honest man. :palm:

The Executive Branch can't fire people under the Executive branch without Congress?

Apparently, you failed the third grade and have been wallowing in ignorance and stupidity ever since.

When Biden made promises to foreign leaders, like with Orca, they knew he would do everything in his power to deliver. When trump makes promises, he usually forgets them within minutes.

Nothing interesting about Democratic ignorance and stupidity and wasting time and money.
Paying a hundred thousand employees to do nothing is a huge waste of money. With a regular buyout, there is at least a plan to get rid of the position. Here we have no plan, so after 7 months of paying someone to do nothing, we have to find someone new to take the job.

We are still working out how bad this will be, but imagine you have an application for a permit in to a government agency. The person who would have approved that permit is allowed to not work for the next 7 months. Then it takes a year or two to find a new person to approve the permit. In theory, there will be other people to share the work, but still you are looking at months delay from red tape.... WITH NO SPENDING CUTS!!!

Like all government entities, it's shoot first, shoot some more, and if anyones left alive, claim qualified immunity
You and I would be agreed that politicians like to cover their asses. It's the system that needs to be protected, not the ideologies of assholes trying to protect their jobs.

Almost all government employees are spurred by a mission to do their jib well, for the people.I find them overall , more dedicated than corporate workers.

You cannot punish the workers for trump's insane offer.

But remember, these workers do important work. Losing them for months, without any reduction in spending, is insane.
Agreed. It will take a few months for the results to start showing. Trump will, of course, blame it on the Democrats while saying "It takes time", but in the end, voters will start to become disgruntled as they seem the oligarchy raking in the dough while they suffer for lack of services and decreased quality of life.

All Trump's buyout does is to give a seven month paid vacation for civil servants who are already at or near retirement age, or those who were thinking of quitting anyway.

It's a waste of taxpayer money, and will hollow out agencies of their most experienced employees and those with the most institutional knowledge.
