President Trump got barely two minutes into his speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night before Representative Al Green, Democrat of Texas, stood to protest, disrupting the proceedings in a display that ultimately got him thrown out of the House chamber.

During Trump’s speech some other Democrats held up signs that read slogans such as “Musk steals” – in reference to Elon Musk, the tech billionaire tasked by Trump with slashing the federal government – and “false” and “save Medicare."
One other Democrat, congresswoman Melanie Stansbury, held up a sign that said simply: “This is not normal.” Lance Gooden, Republican congressman from Texas, grabbed the sign and threw it in the air.

Even after his ejection, Green remained defiant.

“It’s worth it to let people know that there are some people who are going to stand up” to Trump, Green told the White House press pool, adding that he wasn’t sure if he’d face any formal punishment for his protest.

Democrats continue to leave the chamber during speech​


Democratic lawmakers are continuing to duck out of President Trump’s speech.

The Democratic side of the chamber now has plenty of open seats as lawmakers leave. Some made shows of their exit to protest the president’s remarks, while others appeared to be simply ducking out as Trump’s speech goes on.

The members of Congress included Reps. Veronica Escobar, Ilhan Omar, Pramila Jayapal and Jamie Raskin.

I can see why. It was a rousing speech. Those that stayed were really stone faced about closing the border and the Lankin Riley Act. They were really pissed about that.

Democrats protest Trump's speech to Congress with disruption, exits and solemn signs​


Representative Jasmine Crockett of Texas and others turned their backs as Trump spoke, revealing messages like "Resist" and "No Kings live here" on the backs of their shirts before exiting.

Some stared bleakly, had their face in their hands or were looking at their phones. Senator Jeff Merkley of Oregon held up a Ukrainian flag as Trump launched into brief remarks about foreign policy.

Others held up small round signs that read "Save Medicaid," "Protect Veterans" and "Musk Steals," in reference to the drastic cost-cutting actions of billionaire and Trump ally Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency.

 
Representative Rashida Tlaib of Michigan carried a white board, on which she scribbled different messages in response to Trump's words, including "No King!"

Representative Melanie Stansbury of New Mexico, the top Democrat on the House DOGE subcommittee who has insisted that Musk testify before lawmakers about his agency's actions, held up a sign behind Trump as he walked into the chamber.
"This is not normal," it read.

Republican Representative Lance Gooden of Texas snatched it from her and tossed it into the air.
