How would someone PROVE they are in love? Maybe by a public declaration of love, and the promise to share their lives? Or maybe joining together their lives and all their possessions?

If two people of the same gender get married, that is, by definition, a same-sex marriage.

The fact that you do not approve or agree with the law does not change that.

Not quite accurate.

There are hundreds of benefits that come with being married. The people who have been in long term relationships but were unable to marry thought that wasn't fair. So they changed it.

But I do. First the laws regarding marriage never prohibited any gay from getting married. That's lie #1. Lie #2 call it gay "marriage" is like calling a bicycle a motorcycle.

On top of that govt has the authority to define marriage as one man and one woman just like they define, who can drive, who can own a gun, who can vote and who can drink. As far as I can see the law of one man and one woman never allowed straight people to marry someone of the same sex so what ended up happening is gays got special treatment. And please don't try matty who they love bullshit. Love is not a condition of marriage as far as the govt is concerned. Its just more special pleading by self absorbed assholes.

Until the law changed EVERY same-sex couple was refused marriage. So EVERY was refused marriage if they wanted to marry someone of the same gender.

I have the first idea how but that's not my point. The point is "marrying someone you love" is useless bullshit because no one is required to prove they love the person they will marry. The laws regarding marriage were equally applied to everyone regardless of their proclivities.

Civil unions are fine. But marriage is a different thing. They want a marriage. The only thing denying same-sex couple marriage is the Bible's ban on homosexuality. And being against Biblical law does not mean anything, legally.

And the laws are designed to protect both parties, should the marriage end.

Yeah but the law didn't discriminate against gays. Felons can't legally oen a gun who people of the same gender couldnt legally get married. A law consistently applied is a valid non discriminatory law.
