WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump on Saturday said the United States will control Venezuela for an unspecified period and is “not afraid” to have military forces on the ground after a nighttime operation resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife.

“It was an assault like people have not seen since World War II,” Trump said during a news conference at his Mar-a-Lago Club in Palm Beach, Fla. “We’re going to run the country until such a time we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition. And we are ready to stage a second and much larger attack, if we need to do so.”
