Melania Trump documentary not showing in South African cinemas​


Cinemas in South Africa will not be showing the documentary about US First Lady Melania Trump that is due to be released around the world on Friday.
The South African distributor Filmfinity has decided not to release it, its head of sales and marketing told the New York Times and South Africa-based website News24. The company was not explicit about the reasons behind the move.
The film, Melania, is not promoted on the websites of the country's main cinema chains. One Cape Town independent cinema contacted by the BBC said that it was called by Filmfinity and told not to list it.

Melania Trump’s ambitious $75 million documentary, Melania, is being ruthlessly trolled on the internet. The movie might turn out to be a huge box-office disaster, as it’s struggling to sell tickets ahead of its release on Friday, January 30, 2026.

Social media users have been highlighting this, sharing screenshots of zero or minimal tickets being sold at theatres across the U.S.

Community activist Travis Akers took to his X account to state, “Not a single ticket sold for the opening night 9:55 p.m. showing of Melania at the busiest movie theater in the metro Jacksonville area.” Ackers also shared a screenshot of an empty booking screen in Florida, which is supposed to be one of the President’s residences.

He further took a dig at the film and said, “How many days until we learn that the RNC bought movie tickets for the Melania movie just to fluff the numbers?”
