Yes, same time for Toxic. And yes, well before civil rights. It was the time of "Whites Only" and when "those colored people knew their place." Kids got whipped at home and at school. Husbands could beat their wives and children with impunity. Alcoholism and drug abuse were common in the white middle class suburbs (and elsewhere) but no one talked about it. Gays knew better than to stick their noses out of the closet. The only approved religion was mainstream Protestant, and if you were upwardly mobile you had better attend services regularly. Women were relegated to menial or female-only jobs. They couldn't even get birth control without their husband's approval. If unmarried, they couldn't get it at all. Nor could they have credit in their own names.
