then go ahead and defame someone....then yell fire in a theater where there is no fire....then threaten to kill someone.....

we are not talking about reputation

wrong again....speech has impact, speech makes things happen....speech can cause harm....some speech does in fact lack protection....., for example, if i disparage your work professionalism...and it has no truth.....that is not protected speech.....thus....there is in fact a limit on speech

come on GL.....you know that is not true....that is like saying i can kill anyone, anytime i want to....so can you, so can anyone...

you act as if speech has no consequences.....really....do you really believe that?

again....speech can equal harm...but for that speech, there would be no harm....

I think of Charles Manson when I think of this argument. For me, that is one of the best incidents of how speech and using speech to instruct harm to others was not his first ammendment right. Of course it's more convoluted than that, but Chuck instructed those people to kill and look where he landed.

I am reminded of what many moms used to say when kids used "every one else does it" as an excuse.

Just because some one says something doesn't mean you have to do it.

HE isn't a citizen! right?

Right.

"Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said Wikileaks' actions undermined US foreign policy efforts and amounted to "an attack on the international community, the alliances and partnerships, the conventions and negotiations that safeguard global security and advance economic prosperity".

New York Congressman Pete King has called for the US Attorney General to designate Wikileaks a terrorist organisation and to prosecute founder Julian Assange for espionage.

Much of the criticism of Wikileaks, though, revolves around the notion that releasing such information risks lives.

Identities of informants could be compromised, spies exposed, and the safety of human rights activists, journalists and dissidents jeopardised when information of their activities is made public, the argument goes.

US military officials contend that allowing enemies access to their strategic and operational documents creates a dangerous environment for American troops serving abroad.

On Saturday, US state department legal adviser Harold Koh wrote in a letter to Wikileaks that the most recent document dump "could place at risk the lives of countless innocent individuals" as well as "ongoing military operations".

He accused Wikileaks of endangerment "without regard to the security and the sanctity of the lives your actions endanger".

But is there any real evidence of this peril?"

I would always say, if (fill in name) jumped off a cliff, would you do it, too?
It was one of my funnier parental lines, I thought!

Exactly.

Thus, I'd view any attempt to compare Assange with Manson as futile.

I wonder why some people think he should be punished.

"Wikileaks is currently working through the publication of more than 250,000 US diplomatic cables, whose release has embarrassed the United States.

It has condemned the disclosures - including indiscreet descriptions of world leaders and instructions to spy at the UN - as an attack on the world community.

Asked by Andrew Marr if Mr Assange, who is in hiding, was in fear of his life, Mr Stephens said: "It's interesting to note people as high up the American tree as Sarah Palin have called for him to be hunted down by American special forces and assassinated.

"We've seen a number of suggestions that he should be assassinated, again from credible sources around the world.

"This is all about a man who is a journalist. He received, unbidden, an electronic brown envelope that journalists receive.

"This particular journalist has put it out. What they are doing is criminalising him, criminalising journalistic activity.

He said any attempt to take Mr Assange to Sweden could be a precursor to taking him on to the US, adding: "I'm really rather worried by the political motivations that appear to be behind this."

It was a L-O-O-S-E association, not literal. It reminded me of the power of words and the power and affect they can have on others.

We aren't going to solve the Assange issue here no matter how seriously we take ourselves.

They arrested him in London while most in the US were sleeping. My guess is this will be one of the most followed trials since OJ.

I also think there will be lots of demonstrations during the trial! I also think he will release more documents! or maybe negotiate for a deal and use them as ransom!
I don't think Sweden really cares if he releases more embarrassing stuff about the US.

Well, that is true and this is for the sex crime, right and not the US issue...what about pressure from us, will it come in any form?
I don't know. So far Obama's response has been to tell Diplomatic employees not to look at the released material and students in diplomatic classes not to read them or speak about them on the blogs where they are still available to read. Seriously, if we wanted to really look like wimps to the rest of the world, our response is the best way to go about it. I don't really believe that Obama is doing much about it, mostly because it looks like he isn't. Maybe he's frantic behind the scenes, but in this case it would behoove him to appear a bit more angry in front of a camera.

That's about as harsh as he will get more than likely.

I am very disappointed with him on many levels, it isn't making my Christmas merry and bright! I have to turn off the TV and make cookies!

One article that I read said Assange is being charged with "surprise sex" the condom broke! In Sweden that is a crime! They have very tough laws.
