House Democrats defy Obama on tax cut bill (CNN)

Washington (CNN) -- House Democrats voted Thursday against considering the tax package that President Barack Obama negotiated with Republicans, raising questions over the president's influence in his own party.

Later, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nevada, released the first version of legislation to implement the negotiated deal and said the Senate would vote Monday to open debate on it. The Senate version made public by Reid was largely the same as the deal announced by Obama, but it added extensions of some tax breaks intended to spur green energy investment, such as ethanol use.

However, the vote by the House Democratic caucus was a defiant rejection of both the agreement on tax and benefit measures, as well as what many Democrats in the chamber perceived as being marginalized in the talks by the White House.

I guess a bunch more of them want to go home in 2012.

Since there was a compromise in place, there is no way in hell they can lay this one on republican obstructionism. And when all those families with kids in the 50K income range see their monthly paychecks drop almost $200/mo due to taxes going back up to Clinton era rates, it will be the jackass party they will (quite correctly) blame. I do not see "we just HAD to tax the rich more, so we were forced by the republicans to tax you more, too" will cut it as an excuse.

I think the Dems are going to lose this gamble....I think more people want all taxes lower than those that want higher taxes for people over $250k, not to mention people who want action on estate taxes and unemployment.....

I think they must be hearing from their constituents, is what I have been hearing.

they've been hearing from the constituents they want to hear from....I know when I email Debbie Strabinow she doesn't listen to me....I just get responses saying she's grateful for the opportunity to do such a good job in Washington for me.....which makes it obvious she is NOT reading what I wrote.....

Why start listening now? My guess is their constituents do not want lower middle income families paying more than $3000 per year more on taxes at this moment in time. Methinks they are "hearing" only what they want to hear and playing a bad hand.

Bottom line: the rich had the tax cuts for years....but didn't create the jobs they swore they could with those tax cuts.

The anti-Obama GOP have been screaming about deficits with every Obama proposal...but seems as long as their base support gets what they want, they suddenly don't give a damn.

It's the height of hypocrisy for ANY neocon GOP supporter to bitch about a proposed Dem filibuster of this latest cave in by Obama....given the recent RECORD of filibusters logged and threatened by the GOP.

For the record....anything that is under and up to 250,000 goes by the standard tax rate...the additional taxes kick in AFTER 250,000.

What the hell are you talking about? The Bush Tax Cuts are scheduled to expire, if they are not renewed, taxes on EVERYONE increases, not just the people over $250k. There is no "additional taxes kick in" ...the top marginal rate goes up by 3%, and that is not 3% on amounts over this or that, that's up 3% on the total.

And for the record, not a peep out of this GOP'er about Dems filibustering! I say GO FOR IT! Filibuster away! I hope you are successful at thwarting Obama's attempt to reach a bipartisan compromise with Republicans, I couldn't ask for a better Christmas gift! THANKS!

Methinks that the Dems are pissing off a lot of unemployed people getting UB.

I don't think these people like the thought of taking the best job they can get because the welfare is running out.

As much as I don't trust the reps, they did extend UBs by 13 months I'm told. I totally don't agree with them, but they did do more for them than the dems.

Tax credits for children are reduced. Taxes for the middle class go up on average of $3600 per year... (That will reduce the deficit... that has to be their goal). Couple that with child credit reductions and many will be paying more than $5000 more per year. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Married couples go back to what they paid before...

The lowest brackets go from paying zero taxes and being net receivers due to EIC back to paying...

It's wunnerful!

Lets not wait for a volentary tax.

You can start now with a 90% tax on your own income, (if you make an income) and then you can give all you have. Everything. I'm sure the number of people such as yourself will come out of the cracks in great numbers.

That way people making $250.000.00+ a year can choose to not give the additional amount wanted by Obama, and others. If they so choose.:)

:palm: Your taxes will have to rise some anyway JUST TO ADDRESS THE ADDITIONS TO THE DEFICITS AS A RESULT OF THE SHRUBS TAX CUTS FOR THE RICH AND A INVASION/OCCUPATION THAT WAS KEPT OFF THE BOOKS. Here are some more basic explanations as to the error in your logic:

As to your drooling about the Dem filibuster...you just demonstrate Exactly what I was talking about....and given the Party of No record on it's slavish adherence to the "trickle down" theory....2012 may not pan out like you think.

Well, I hope that lame attempt at sarcasm made you feel better.....doesn't alter the truth of what I wrote one iota....but now that you've gotten that bit of silliness off your chest, maybe you can rationally discuss the issue with me?

Here's the reality check I gave Dixie....hope it helps.

Now, now, now. Facts mean nothing, don't you know? It's the DNC lies that count.

Ne pas baiser avec le taichi la réalité.

You conveniently failed to mention the Obama "stimulus" package, which has created very few jobs (even if Obama's wildly inflated claim of 3 million jobs is correct, that's at a cost of $270,000 per job), doubled the deficit, and added nearly a trillion dollars to the national debt.

It has been proven that the Bush tax cuts created jobs. As for Obama's stimulus, which was more expensive than 7 years in Iraq (and I also opposed the Iraq war),
we're expected to simply take his word for it.
