Unless you're bleeding or dying....

When I was a wee tot, my brothers and sisters were often sent to the back yard to play, while my mother took a little "me" time, to get away from us kids, so as to not go completely bat shit crazy. See, we would have driven the woman over the edge, if it weren't for her daily sabbatical, where we discovered 'prison life' inside the impenetrable fence surrounding our back yard. The final instructions she gave, before retiring to her room to a world of One Life To Live and General Hospital.... "Don't disturb me unless you are bleeding or dying!"

It was in these days, I discovered much about self-preservation, being reliant upon my own street sense, to cope with whatever challenges were presented. There was no "Mama" to bail me out if I got in trouble, or if trouble somehow found me, which it always seemed to do. My brothers and sisters were not reliable to fend for me, most of the time, the trouble was directly instigated by one of them, so this became hopeless. Basically, I had to figure it out. What this taught me was, there is always something you can do to get through anything, without relying on a higher authority to provide help.

My mother was very smart, she knew this self-reliance lesson would mold us into self-reliant individuals, and it did. As we grew older, this lesson would present itself over and over, and both me and my siblings, met the challenges and dealt with the crisis, without depending on some outside providing source of aid and assistance. And we've all raised our children pretty much the same way, to be self-reliant and responsible for themselves.

This is a lesson I wish our Congress and Electorate could learn. 80% of these people in line to get 'emergency relief' to pay their high power bills, could probably figure it out on their own, if there were no relief program. Those who are receiving food stamps, could probably figure out how to survive, and wouldn't starve to death, for lack of them. The list goes on and on, Head Start, Free School Breakfast, Lunch, (and soon, Dinner)... Health care! Education! Stimulus! All of these stupid boneheaded things we are paying for and doing, and for the most part, they are not needed, people could figure this shit out on their own, if they had to.

I hope this is the message the new Congress sends to liberals... Unless you're bleeding or dying, we don't want to hear about spending more money.

Ahhh, but your Momma was in the room and available IF something happened. Where was the help when the levees broke in Louisiana?

As for children's programs the family dynamic has changed just like it changed regarding elderly folks. Families move and split up so the elderly require a support system in the form of pensions. Similarly, families are not always available after school to look after children so after-school programs and, yes, dinner, is a great idea!

I just don't understand the Repub/Conservative philosophy. They forever ramble on about family and children but when it comes to putting their money where their mouth is they turn their back on the most needy.

Before the Repubs/Conservatives start dictating bringing children into the world by outlawing abortion let's get programs in place. Unless, of course, they don't really give a damn about children's welfare.

fixed that for you.

If the levees broke in Louisiana, where would the help be today? If a levee had broken in our back yard, it is doubtful my Mom would have been able to help us....just figuring... we would have probably been washed away before she even heard our cries for help. So how is it, you can concoct the unrealistic scenario in your mind, that government, or any entity, can save us from natural disasters?

Well good, you can contribute your whole paycheck to feeding other people's kids, there are numerous charity programs out there for you to be so generous to! I am glad to hear you think this is a great idea! Maybe you could even start a free after-school daycare program? You could even take care of the elderly as well! When you get all of that stuff up and running, give me a call, I would be willing to send you a donation. I think that is just a wonderful idea you have, and wish you great success!

Actually, the IRS records show Conservatives to be much more charitable than Liberals. For instance, my personal charitable contributions in 2007, were ten times greater than VP Joe Biden's. So this is just factually inaccurate, Conservatives are very generous to charity.

No, let's get YOU in place, NOT more programs! Let's marginalize you for the irrelevant bunch of punks and misfits you are, and expose your vulgar and immoral behavior for what it is.

Seems so black and white to a childish mind until you get to the reality of the matter.
I personally know many people who's wealth is being sucked to the top and they are slipping into poverty. Examples, a college educated friend of mine who was in mortgage banking and real estate has been looking for a job for over a year. His car just broke down, for him it's coming down to fixing the car or going hungry. I share food with him. A retired lady I know (in her late 70s) has a son who hasn't been able to find work for over a year, his wife just lost her job at a company that went out of business. They moved to an apt close to the retired lady and are living off of her dead husband's pension and social security. Their kids are getting thinner. A chef that I play poker with worked in upscale Scottsdale restaurants until 6 months ago and is finding out that he can't even get a short order cooks job. Employers know that if a better opportunity comes by he will be gone so they hire the cheapest and least experienced Mexican they can find. I know a guy who just took a job driving a cab on the night shift, (only shift open) he feels his life is on the line so he can feed his kids.
Get real Dix, over the last 30 yrs. conservative ideology has purposely ruined this country for short term profits. Now you want people to starve.

You do have a point. Similar to the Repub "No child left behind depending, of course, on where the child originated." Offer credits to private schools but de-fund the public schools where the poor go.

Obviously a government opposed to helping citizens are not going to help. Is that so difficult to figure out?

Again, are you suggesting the richest country on the face of the earth can not look after it's children and elderly?

If that's the case and you are donating such a large portion of your income it doesn't make sense you would not want others to contribute. If everyone contributes your portion would/could be less. So you're saying you don't want part of your taxes to go towards helping? You'd rather contribute more voluntarily? If so, I call bullshit.

No, let's get YOU in place, NOT more programs! Let's marginalize you for the irrelevant bunch of punks and misfits you are, and expose your vulgar and immoral behavior for what it is.

Ahhh, yes. The typical Con/Repub response. "Outlaw abortion. Children are sooo special. Well, unless they're children of teens or single mothers. Then they're just little bastards."

I have a friend who is/was a bartender at the casino. At 61 his investment portfolio has dropped over 25%. Then he went on sick leave for a hip replacement. His income does not include the amount he made in tips which was considerable.

He'll never gain back what he lost, investment-wise, as he'll have to start using the capital to live on until his pension kicks in. He'll never get another job unless it's in some dive.

He's fluent in at least three languages I know of and has traveled extensively. He'll go from discussing world events and 20 dollar tips to discussing transmission problems and 50 cent tips.

People are hurting.

America the land of the Greed.

"Something is profoundly wrong with the way we live today. For thirty years we have made a virtue out of the pursuit of material self-interest: indeed, this very pursuit now constitutes whatever remains of our sense of collective purpose. We know what things cost but have no idea what they are worth. We no longer ask of a judicial ruling or a legislative act: is it good? Is it fair? Is it just? Is it right? Will it help bring about a better society or a better world? Those used to be the political questions, even if they invited no easy answers. We must learn once again to pose them." Tony Judt 'Ill Fares the Land'

"The sacredness of the other is anathema for the Christian right, which cannot acknowledge the legitimacy of other ways of being and believing. If other belief systems, including atheism, have moral validity, the infallibility of the movement's doctrine, which constitutes its chief appeal, is shattered. There can be no alternative ways to think or to be. All alternatives must be crushed." Chris Hedges

This guy makes a lot of sense. Really got my attention at 7 min. I know people there and its true.

Yeah, I know, Crashk... my wealth is being sucked to the top as well! Every year, a percentage of my wealth is confiscated and sent to Washington, where the people at the top decide it is better spent on teaching African males how to put a condom on a banana, rather than staying in my pocket... and if I happen to earn more wealth, they take an even bigger cut.

Let me tell you bleeding hearts how we can "fix" these individual problems you've introduced... we can let these people figure out what they are going to do, and how they are going to make it, on their own. This will do two things, it will save us a tremendous amount of revenue, and it will also teach these people to solve their own problems and be self-reliant. Oh, but that's just too cruel, Dixie, we can't do that! We're not going to have a choice pretty soon, we have no more money! It's probably more humane and caring to make this 'hard choice' now, as opposed to when civilization completely collapses, at least the people have a chance to learn how to fend for themselves. If it doesn't involve people bleeding or dying, don't bother bringing your spending bills to the floor. That's the mindset this Congress needs to have.

we have no more money!

That is a lie!

There are vacant houses and families sleeping on the street.

There is plenty of food produced in the US and people are going hungry?

There is no shortage of food and housing. Let's just start there. The money and labor required to build those houses have already been supplied. Someone, somewhere, has already parted with the money and time to build them.

How? How did they part with that money and time? Did they not eat? Did they sleep on the street while the money was used to build those houses? Are they still sleeping on the street waiting for those houses to sell?

As a country the money is there. Lots of money. More than plenty to ensure people have food and shelter and medical care.

Other countries supply a social safety net. Countries much poorer than the US.

You are propagating a lie!

we have no more money!

That is a lie!

NO, It's NOT a lie! This is why they are talking about "raising the debt ceiling." Did you think that was some sort of African dance move? We're $12 trillion in the red as it stands now, and we've broken records for spending the past two years in a row. You're a fucking moron if you don't understand we are broke.

African dance move!????? RACIST! proven once again, by our beloved Dixie, and proven with his own words! You have tainted the Dark Side of the Moon album cover! That is a grievous sin!

:viol:

Go tell em that if they vote for dems, things will get better.

Of course I'm not defending the Reps here. I'm just not stupid enough to defend either socialist party.

"raising the debt ceiling" An African dance? Nooo, I was thinking more along the lines of

"We skipped the light fandango
turned cartwheels 'cross the floor
I was feeling kinda seasick
but the crowd called out for more
The room was humming harder
as the ceiling flew away
When we called out for another drink
the waiter brought a tray

The only reason the government is broke is due to wealthy tax cuts and the military. Do us both a favor and Google how much the tax cuts for the wealthy are cheating the country. Then Google how much the military is taking out of the economy.

"There is no money" is a LIE!
