Disaster

here is the thing, bush did make mistakes regarding katrina.....

Here's where you and I have a fundamental disagreement in principle. As far as what presidents do regarding national disasters, Bush's response to Katrina went 'above and beyond' the norm. Could Bush have handled public relations better? I think that is obviously clear... it was his Achilles Heel! Could Bush have appointed a better director of FEMA? Perhaps! Was Bush stupid to go into Iraq? Maybe... none of that has anything to do with what presidents do when there is a national disaster. In THAT regard, Bush did something unprecedented, no other president in the history of America had declared a national disaster BEFORE the actual disaster! NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE BUSH!

Yurt, this is a prime example of how you are easily manipulated by the Liberal 'meme' of the day... You heard incessant complaints about Bush, relentless non-stop complaints... for days and days on end... to the point where you finally gave in and said... meh... okay, so Bush made some mistakes! WHAT MISTAKES? Please list them here! I want to know, what could Bush have done differently as president? He took unprecedented action and declared a disaster before it was a disaster.... response doesn't come much quicker than that, unless you expected Bush to have a crystal ball or something!

Bush and his incredibly bad leadership...

What aspects were bad? Ohh... I know! That he violated the constitution and overstepped his authority as president, to declare a national disaster BEFORE the disaster took place! I guess he should consider himself lucky the Democrats didn't try to impeach him over that one, huh?

Katrina reaction was a byproduct of Liberal Politics... plain and simple... You see, President Bush was reeling in the public opinion polls due to the war in Iraq.... blood in the water, so to speak... So when Katrina happened, Liberals exploited the tragedy, created a whole city of "victims" and moaned and whined like the liberals they are, prompting government to spring into action and try to help the "poor victims" ...which they did, and the "victims" took full advantage of the generosity, and whined for more help, because they are LIBERALS!

You are correct... LIBERALS could learn a LOT from the Japanese people... they are not having a pity party, making themselves 'victims' or whining about the situation... they immediately rolled up their sleeves and started cleaning up, assessing the damage, and the rebuilding process.

Don't be so bloody stupid. It's not about party politics, it's about national character!

Bush appointed himself "decider." He told LA before the hurricane hit that the feds were ready for anything. He was slow to react when the hurricane did hit. And he appointed a crony who was a horse trainer to head up FEMA.

His leadership during Katrina was very correctly questioned & criticized; it's one of his biggest failures.

My point, which perhaps was not as clear as it might have been had nothing to do with government or bush. It was about an attitude that seems to prevail in some sections of both the US and the European society, that 'I deserve to be looked after'. AND despite the righteous right's denial it varies inversely with the degree of national conceit and arrogance.

No, it's about Liberal character versus self-reliant character. The Japanese aren't sitting around whining for government to take care of them. Hundreds of thousands, packed into the shelters, their homes and everything they own is gone... Yet there they are, as you put so eloquently, pressing on!

they are called Yats
I started to listen to your rant, and remembered your the drund dude without a car who lives in a foreign to you country.

Bollocks. It has nothing to do with Liberal OR Republican.
The Japanese, like many others of the orient, value self control and respect for each other and themselves.
The floods in China brought out a similar national characteristic.
One capitalist democratic economy, one totalitarian.
The one common factor is their ethnicity.
The same ethnicity that puts Japanese near the top in business, Chinese at the top in study.
No more excuses. This is not an ant-eye-american comment. The same applies to many Europeans. The work ethic exists only in certain fields. Fat yanks who whine that their government is not looking after them, lazy Europeans who think that because things were easy that they should remain so.
If you have any money, invest in the Project for the New Asian Century. It will last a lot longer than your silly little PNAC.

It's also not historically accurate. Say "Katrina" for the next 100 years, and who do people think of...Nagin, or Bush?

Too bad for you Bushies....

Yeah, rely on Americans to remember the name of a mayor vs. a president. That's a real meter for you... :good4u:

Elucidate.

Happy to.

The major cultural difference between Japan and USA is one of shame vs. guilt. Japanese children are still taught the basics of respect and politeness from the remnants of an Imperial culture. To be disrespectful or impolite got a serf in some seriously deep sushi.....with quite possibly losing ones head during the samurai days. That is still instilled in most every generation over there.

Here in America, most parents and kids don't give a damn and it shows.

I never said it was Liberal OR Republican... I said it's liberal character versus self-reliant character. The Japanese people, much like the American conservatives, believe strongly in self-reliance. The "victims" of Katrina were mostly Liberals, who do not believe strongly in self-reliance, but rather, government taking care of their every need.

I agree, same thing is happening in the UK and across Europe.. Liberal character versus self-reliant character! Those who protest in the streets because government can no longer afford to do for them, versus those who just want the government to get out of their way and let them take care of themselves.
