If a 16 yr old is routinely having sex and happens to have sex with an adult I'm opposed to jailing the adult. We let child molesters out and have them registered, consentual sex is not rape

Imagine proving that the kid is "regularly having sex", there would be people saying you were trying to "blame the victim"... Kind of like people who say, "What was she doing in that part of town at 2 AM?" when they see a rape victim. We set lines based on our own experiences and memories, and work with the least "powerful" denominator. In this case, how old do you think a girl should be before her teacher should be allowed free hands-on experience?

In this case 16 is a minor. Most state laws allow for a four-year difference in age for minors. So, if the teacher were only 20, she'd be safe. But she clearly wasn't that young. She had a daughter old enough to date a 16 year old.

The educational profession is pretty strict about this. If a teacher has sex with an 18 year-old student, he/she is going to risk losing their certificate and career. The fact that the student was not her pupil could potentially save her, but the specifics are generally localized. A teacher is expected to represent their community, so a teacher in Vegas could easily moonlight behind a card table or a bar, but a teacher in the suburbs would probably receive pressure to quit those jobs.
