There is a way to change Medicare. Considering older individuals generally require more medication the government should negotiate with the drug companies. Of course, the simplest and most efficient way is to implement one medicare plan for everyone, namely a government plan.

How many elderly folks are dealing with illnesses that might have been prevented or slowed if they had received treatment earlier, treatment before they were eligible for Medicare? This dance is going to go on until a full government plan is finally put into effect.

I'm confident Obama's second term will result in major changes. The Dems need to lay out how other countries have dealt with the same problem. Gather up the dozen or so best plans from other countries and reformulate those ideas to fit the US. Lot's of material to work with.

Obama said he would only pass HC if he had a mandate...he passed HC without a mandate. Entitlement spending is not the way to cover the needy it is the way to grow government and give away control over your health. National HC will be the same economic boondoggle and stranglehold that it is for every country that has it....and as it proves to be in our country for social security; welfare; medicare; and medicaid. Rationing care by government is the WRONG way to take care of your health. Yes, private insurers have restrictions on coverage ...but you sign up for it with knowledge of what you are buying. If they try and screw you, you appeal to a government state insurance commissioner-and are free to take your business elsewhere. With the government run plan you have no one above them to oversee them...

Clinton's disclosure proves he and other dems KNOW that medicare needs to be reformed, but that they are such political hacks that they'll only use medicare as a way to undermine republican opponents via dishonesty.

Absolutely. Two items that Dems have wanted to reform that Republicans have opposed would save, as estimated by the CBO, $200 billion annually. Those are, allowing the federal government to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies for the price of prescription drugs for seniors and eliminating the "Cost Plus" medicare payment system and replacing with payment on a treatment basis were hospitals and physicians are paid a predetermined rate for treating an illness. The fact that Republicans have undermined any attempt to implement these two common sense const saving reforms tells me that Republicans intend, as evidenced by Ryancare, to eliminate Medicare all together.

Again, you're not paying attention cause Bill Clinton did state specifically IN PUBLIC that he opposes Ryancare as it would end medicare as we know it. He then stated, as he did to Ryan, that doing nothing was not an option for Democrats and he then stated that Republicans are not serious about reforming medicare if taxes were off the table. He said that, he said it publicly and it was all over the TV yesterday in the morning news/politics programs. You just weren't paying attention is all.

A government plan could be augmented by private insurance. For example, those who prefer a private room.

When I was hospitalized the hospital wanted me to take a private room as I had insurance to cover it but I preferred a "ward", four people including myself. When bed-ridden a private room becomes solitary confinement.

As for government medical being an economic boondoggle and stranglehold medical costs are at least 1/3 less than US costs. Almost every country complains about medical costs whether they be 8% of GDP or 10% or 12% or....

Again, it doesn't matter if it's $3,000/pp or $4,000/pp or $5,000/pp every country complains. The difference is every citizen is covered and the vast majority insist their government keep their plan.

Private insurance means everyone won't be covered OR it will cost more than any government plan to cover everyone. Considering it's all about costs those who propose private insurance support a plan that would result in some people not being covered and the objective is to cover everyone.
