California Christians worship in a big way

The state has more megachurches than anywhere else in the country, with the majority in the suburbs between Los Angeles and San Diego. Their upbeat approach is luring thousands each weekend.

Thanks to good weather, sprawling suburbs and a number of charismatic pastors, the Golden State has more of these megachurches -- defined as those with at least 2,000 congregants -- than any other state. California is home to 193, slightly more than Texas with 191, according to the most recent survey by the Hartford Institute for Religion Research, one of the nation's leading authorities on megachurches.

The majority of these congregations are in the suburbs between Los Angeles and San Diego, an area that some who study the phenomenon call the Southern California Bible Belt.

Thankfully, the Catholic Church has geographical breakdowns called parishes, so that you don't wind up with such a travesty as a congregation of thousands.

do you see a disassociation between the money spent on that cathedral and the number of people it is serving?

Yeah, that is a really old cathedral from the look of its beauty. All of the shacks that have been made in the last 40 years by the Church do not compare with that one at all. I doubt it costs as much to maintain as you are thinking.

No. And I don't see a priest or altar servers, which suggests that Mass either hasn't begun or is over. Nothing in the picture indicates that these people are the entire membership being served.

Uh, the Catholic Church has these things in large metro areas called "Cathedrals" and they dward most protestant megachurches and can seat tens of thousands. Some Catholic you are.

2000 members is a "megachurch"? Heck we have 1400 families registered at ours.

No kidding!

Joel Osteen and his wife run a mega-church here in Houston and they hold services in what used to be the old Summit. Where the Rockets used to play before they got their new Arena. The place holds 18,000 people and from what I hear, most weekends the building is near capacity.

In 2004, the Saddleback Church in Orange County, CA, pastored by Rick Warren (Obama's friend) was coming in as the third largest church in the US with 20,100 attendees. I am sure that has at least doubled by now.

They look more like Filipino's then Koreans.

The main sanctuary of Yoido Full Gospel Church, Seoul the largest church in the world, can seat 15,000 persons, somewhat smaller than the amphitheater Jesus and Ganid visited in Caesarea. But this church has annexes which can seat additional 15,000 persons. The annexes are connected via cable and believers can watch and hear the sermon Dr. Yonggi Cho delivers personally during the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th services. About 30,000 persons worship simultaneously during these three services. (Seven services are offered on each Sunday, but sermons are given by other assisting pastors).
