Louisiana is above average income

Louisiana has one of the highest poverty rates, lowest median income levels and highest percentage of people without health insurance, according to statistics released by the Census Bureau.

The state's poverty rate of 21.1 percent is the second-highest in the nation.

The median income for Louisiana residents is about $40,658 a year. That's lower than all but three states: Kentucky, South Carolina and Montana. Nationally, the median income is about $50,000 a year, according to the report.
