So if nobody likes Wal-Mart, why isn’t it the #1 company we’d be better off without? The answer to that question is the same as the answer to this question: if nobody likes Wal-Mart, why is it still around?

People like to pretend that they wouldn't shop there...

LOL. Funny story, I was at a tarts and vicars party earlier this month and this guy was wearing a wife beater that he had to go to {gasp} Walmart to get. His friend told me, so I went up to him and I gave this disapproving look and went,"Oooooohhhhhh, is that from Walmart?".....you should have seen the look of shame that graced his face.......:p he's like, "yeah......how did you know???" it was really funny because he's so not a walmart shopper, he didn't even know where to get a wife beater.

Yeah LadyT it is funny. Elitists are entertaining in their efforts to maintain their percieved elitism.
It seems to me that Wally world pays just as well if not better than other retailer chains. And virtually all of them sell the same stuff made in the same Chinese factories.

No. Walmart is much worse. They don't pay employees overtime despite making them work over 40 hours a week, they are notorious for not promoting women, and additionally, like other retailers they employ sweat shops everywhere. Not to mention, the stores layouts is dispicable, the lines are always long, customer service is deplorable, and I really could go on about the walmarts near me. I don't think its simply a matter of elitism, there are legitimate reasons not to support Walmart.

And the other chain of retailers do not do the same thing ?
I am not paid OT for over 40 hours worked either....
My health insurance costs me $435 /MO. It dropped by half when I dropped the EX's coverage.

Now me, I will not go to a Mall :D

But other wise I have been taught well, buy things as cheaply as I can, It is the American way!

You're not paid over-time because you are salaried and that's the agreement. Low wage workers are usually not salaried and are employed under the agreement that if htey work more than 40 hours a week, they get over time. Walmart has illegally renegged on that deal and I think the market should act appropiately and not shop there.

As for gender discrimination, I think its a clear cut case and they are going to have to pay $hit loads of money to their former employees who were paid less than their male counter parts.

"Wal-Mart is the nation’s largest company, and the world’s largest retailer. It has over 1 million employees working in more than 3400 stores throughout the United States. Although more than two thirds (2/3) of its hourly employees are female, they hold only one third (1/3) of store management jobs, and less that 15% of store manager positions. In addition, as Wal-Mart’s own workforce data reveals, women in every major job category at Wal-Mart have been paid less than men with the same seniority, in every year since 1997 even though the female employees on average have higher performance ratings and less turnover than men. Internal Wal-Mart documents acknowledge that it is “behind the rest of the world” in the promotion of women to management ranks."

As for prices, target and costco's are pretty comparable to Walmart. I don't think we should tolerate businesses that engage in this type of overtly discriminatory and oppressive behaviour.

I am not salaried.....
And I don't want to shoot myself in the foot by raising hell, I would then just wind up working at Wally world.

If a particular job took over 40 hours in a week are you telling me you wouldn't be allowed to take overtime AND you're not salaried?

They actually are the highest paying beginning wage at the newest outside mall area just outside my county.

Yep, that is what I am saying.

Well, its obvious you have some sort of project type job and you're not stacking aisles in a grocery store. And quite frankly probably not very comparable to working at walmart. I'm sure if the employees there were making $70+ or a livable wage, they'd have a lot less complaining to do as well. But the fact they don't.

$70+ ? heck I only make 41.25/hour. Po little me....

If wally world paid their average workers that amount you would be paying $12 for a six pack of beer. You are correct but dreaming LadyT.
