Who are the people they are leaving out, who also are opposed to legalization? The AMA, The American Lung Association? Most all respiratory therapists? The FDA? The Surgeon General? The majorities in both houses of Congress, AND the president? Hmm... why focus on just those 5?
I am an occasional smoker of bud, but I am not in favor of all-out legalization. I believe there would be far too many negative ramifications from such a thing, we'd have people stoned out of their gourds trying to drive school buses and trains, and an ever-growing contingent of people who would choose to remain perpetually stoned. Our society really needs to be productive, not stoned.
I am a strong supporter of an alternative to legalization, which would be, decriminalization. Drop the silly arbitrary bullshit laws on simple possession, but don't allow commercial sale or distribution. Medical MJ has already been exploited as a 'get-around' to legalized pot, it's not being legitimately dispensed for legitimate medical reason, it's being abused to no end where it has been enacted. Some sort of regulation needs to happen with that, because right now, you basically just have 'Pot Shop' set-ups coming up everywhere. Go here to get your 'script, next door to fill it, and the next door to buy your bongs and pipes!
If pot were something that everyone could handle responsibly and use in moderation, I wouldn't have a problem with legalizing it. But we don't live in that universe, and no matter what anyone says, marijuana is a drug which dramatically alters senses. Yeah, to some, it may only alter senses like a cup of coffee, but to others, the exact same amount may alter senses like paint huffing. This all varies due to an abundance of factors, but it's a fact we have to realize when we start talking about making it completely legal and readily available for the public. The very FIRST concern we need to have in this argument, is the safety of the people running around in society who are NOT high on drugs. Speaking as someone who has been stoned quite often, I certainly don't want someone who is stoned, flying my airplane or carrying my kids to school! I'm not all that hot on having them check me out at the grocery store or take my order at McD's... which, ironically, makes my point.
