50 years of progress...

50 years ago, after delivering his "I Have a Dream" speech, Dr. King was invited to the White House for an audience with the President. Yesterday after commemorating the anniversary of the speech, President Obama will go home to the White House.

Politics aside, if you like the President or not... thats a sign of great progress. When you hear people lament on how bad American society is becoming, reflect on the progress of the last 50 years..

It's an excellent point.

Incredible progress has been made at every level. I mean, if you look at how things were in the '60's compared to today - it's a revolutionary difference.

The attitudes that are disappearing are generational; it would be unrealistic to expect them to go away in any kind of short timeframe.

Ok,sorry, now you conservatives can go back to being outraged by Miley Cyrus....

More than republicans were outraged by Miley Cyrus.

On the question of progress .. sort of 'progress' is all that has happened.

African-Americans still face many of the exact same obstacles that were in place 50 years ago.

Obama's election was symbolism, but there have been no substantive changes in law enforcement and the racist treatment of blacks throughout much of America.

Trayvon Martin was a wake-up call that we are still considered second-class citizens by much of America.

Your point about Miley Cyrus is true, that's why I said, CONSERVATIVES, not Republicans. The fear of the "moral decay" of our society is particularly a conservative phenomenon. I dislike it as our society is leaps and bounds better than it was historically. Conservatives scream about "going back" to a "golden age" that only really exists in there made up mind.

I absolutely agree with that good brother.

But my problem with Cyrus and the VMA's in general was not moral decay.

We clearly have a LONG way to go, but the election of Barak Obama is more than symbolic or "Sort of Change".

A large percentage of white Americans voted for President Obama, saying that this black man was more qualified for the job than his white opponent. This is a HUGE shift in the mind of a MAJORITY of white Americans since the 1960's. WE still have institutionalized racism and we some overt racism but we don't have the system and belief structure we had in the 1960's.

My son has never known a president who was White. Once when he saw a well dressed black man, his first question was, "Is that the president". It is his expectation that the Leader of the Free world is most likely black.

I think I love you. :0)

This thread proves that despite how far we have come, the race hustlers like BAC will forever maintain a grievance industry.

They will eventually tune people out. I personally don't care if BAC thinks his people are treated shitty. I don't dislike the President because he is black. I dislike him because of his policies. His defenders hide behind his color because they can't defend his policies.

BAC is no different in attitude. Trayvon wasn't a 17 year old wanna be thug. No, in BACs mind he was a 12 year old angelic child just wanting candy.

Fuck you BAC. Your attitude will only create more Trayvon's. Your "my good brother" routine is a ruse bitch. You have been outed

Oh, I thought it was ridiculous... I'm just not outraged by it. I don't think its a sign of the moral decay of our society. It was just dumb, but heck it worked for her purposes, everyone is talking about her. Many who did not know who she was now know her.

Seriously....what did she do? I pay little attention to pop culture.
