Only a very naive person would believe any law is going to stop the collection of information in this day and age. Even if the government wasn't allowed to collect the information itself it can obtain the information from those who do collect it. One is wiser to assume everything is collected as opposed to living with a false sense of privacy.

I can't think of anyone who wants the government to fix all the problems .. and I'm a socialist.

There is a fundamental difference between left/right perspectives on society. Is the right of the individual more important than the responsibility of society?

How many liberal hands are raised as opposed to those who now complain about privacy?

then there should be no reason to believe any law is going to prevent mass shootings, or terrorist attacks, right? wouldn't one be wiser to assume that these things are just going to happen as opposed to living with a false sense of safety and security?

Not exactly. The government passes laws and enforces them and proscribes penalties.They could pass a law to track/tag every gun and enforce it. They could pass a law prohibiting them from collecting info and not enforce it which is precisely what happened, isn't it?
