I think it really depends on the brand of battery with this one. Some manufacturers simply dump a bunch of AA's into a 6v battery pack. Others may have an actual unified battery cell there, and if you try to open it up, it will ruin your whole day.

I think this is also the case with some 9v batteries, but maybe with AAA's instead?

there are lots of different 14500 (AA) cells out there but the mah varies greatly...I wonder how the mah of these cells compares with that of the average Duracell AA......

Thinking about it you are probably right, they would be just standard zinc chloride batteries and not alkaline ones.
