A stellar revision of the story of life: Svensmark’s cosmic jackpot

The news about Henrik Svensmark's latest paper published by the Royal Astronomical Society back in April has been conveniently buried amongst the noise and clutter that passes for science reporting. Nigel Calder makes the excellent point that In 1960 you couldn't get a job in an American geology department if you believed in continental drift, but by 1970 you couldn't not get the job if you didn’t.

Every time anyone starts a discussion on global warming or climate change, voices are raised in unison, 'It's not my fault'. And the whole subject disappears into a political stew of half cooked ideas and msg boosted theories.
That is not the point.
The point is this, to put it as simply as possible. We live on this planet. We assume it to be good because we have nothing with which to compare it. In the same way we respect our families, our villages, our cities, our countries, we must repect our planet. Not just for the sake of the planet but for our own sake. To show we are not beasts of the field or marauding jackals (do jackals maraud?)
So please, all those who think Obama caused the death of the dinosaurs or that bush was responsible for solar flairs, just shut the f*** up. This is about what kind of people we want to be. Civilised, responsible people who respect this planet and are pleased to replace its wonderful resources where we can, or brain dead takers and stealers with no thought for simple human standards.

I am not sure what your point is, maybe you could clarify?

Here are the main points for the literally challenged.

The long-term diversity of life in the sea depends on the sea-level set by plate tectonics and the local supernova rate set by the astrophysics, and on virtually nothing else.

The long-term primary productivity of life in the sea – the net growth of photosynthetic microbes – depends on the supernova rate, and on virtually nothing else.

Exceptionally close supernovae account for short-lived falls in sea-level during the past 500 million years, long-known to geophysicists but never convincingly explained..

As the geological and astronomical records converge, the match between climate and supernova rates gets better and better, with high rates bringing icy times.

Presented with due caution as well as with consideration for the feelings of experts in several fields of research, a story unfolds in which everything meshes like well-made clockwork. Anyone who wishes to pooh-pooh any piece of it by saying “correlation is not necessarily causality” should offer some other mega-theory that says why several mutually supportive coincidences arise between events in our galactic neighbourhood and living conditions on the Earth.

An amusing point is that Svensmark stands the currently popular carbon dioxide story on its head. Some geoscientists want to blame the drastic alternations of hot and icy conditions during the past 500 million years on increases and decreases in carbon dioxide, which they explain in intricate ways. For Svensmark, the changes driven by the stars govern the amount of carbon dioxide in the air. Climate and life control CO2, not the other way around.

By implication, supernovae also determine the amount of oxygen available for animals like you and me to breathe. So the inherently simple cosmic-ray/cloud hypothesis now has far-reaching consequences, which I’ve tried to sum up in this diagram.

So-o-o-o now you are expecting people to actually read links?
Never done, never do and probably never will. Reason: This forum is for the expression of opinions not for the teaching of science. There undoubtedly are people for whom the learning of scientific facts is truly orgasmic, but not me. I like your pictures and your jokes and sometimes your videos, but the latter tend to simply take too much time and prevent me from doing absolutely nothing.
I thought this was going to be yet another bit about global warming which, frankly, bores me silly. Sorry about that.

LOL
Ching chong admits he doesn't read links. No wonder he's a warmer. He needs someone else to tell him what to believe

Unfortunately a lot of people feel no need to learn anything more after a certain age, I assumed that you were not like that.

Your assumption is correct. However what I learn, where I learn and when I learn are decisions that are mine alone. I dont watch football with the vague hope that I might learn the secrets of the universe at the same time.

A warmer. war-mer? wa-rm-er? w-arm-er? Scarf? electric blanket? gloves? Nope, sorry strange little man, no idea what you are wittering about.
