The Taliban have arrested five women taking part in a protest in the Afghan capital, Kabul, against the ban on women attending universities.

Three journalists were also arrested. Protests are also understood to have taken place in the Takhar province.

Guards stopped hundreds of women from entering universities on Wednesday - a day after the ban was announced.

It is the latest policy restricting women's education since the Taliban returned to power last year.

Girls have already been excluded from most secondary schools.

The new ban was implemented with immediate effect by the higher education minister on Tuesday, with public and private universities ordered to bar women from attending.

The education ministry said its scholars had evaluated the university curriculum and environment, and attendance for girls would be suspended until "a suitable environment" was provided.

Later, the Taliban minister of higher education, Neda Mohammad Nadeem, said on state television that women were banned from university for not following the dress code.

What the hell is that supposed to mean? And who are going to teach those girls and women?

Religions are a blight, a erupting pus, on humanity.

We need to move on but the damn religious extremism refuses to let go.

I used to be very tolerant of religion, and have respect for the views of others.

But religion SUCKS. It is responsible for so much hate, violence, injustice, war, et al. In order for us to become the "better version of ourselves" that is needed to survive long-term, religion has to become a thing of the past.
 
USA should have given Afghan women AK-47s and stinger missiles. They might have put up a better fight than the
men of the defunct Afghan National Army.

To be fair, the most lethal and destructive regimes of the last century were governments that promoted State atheism and actively tried to suppress religion.

The model is a western liberal society that tolerates and protects religious pluralism while operating a secular government.

Oh, for sure. I would never support gov't trying to restrict beliefs, or suppress religion.

I just hope we grow out of it.
