A person should not be allowed to do any of the following until they achieve the age of 25

a) Vote

b) Driving unsupervised by an adult

c) Use recreational drugs (this includes alcohol, tobacco and THC) out of the presence of an adult (25+ years)

d) Enter into a contract without adult supervision (especially independent legal advice)

e) Enlist or be drafted into the military

f) Marriage without adult approval (living with the partner(s) of your choice is based on other legal constraints – like a range of over 2 – 5 years between oldest and youngest partner(s))

When an adult reaches the age of 70, they should be tested periodically for the ability to operate machinery or competency - if they are declared incompetent by a district court, their right to manage their own affairs (including voting) shall be revoked

Well I know your kidding but it aint gonna fly.

I was always fond of the Tolkien idea where Hobbits were not considered adults until 50 though.

It makes sense to me. It is still an arbitrary line, but at least all things are considered for the "Age of Responsibility"...

I find it funny that a guy who has a "dont tred on me" flag on his post wants to tred on other peoples rights. Hhahahahah good one. Typical.

Which rights? All of the above appear to be privileges that are already limited by arbitrary lines.

I was gonna write this big thing about rights provided under the constitution (The 26th Amendment for example )and all that but I threw it away in favor of .... who the fuck are you to tell my 18 yr old with a drivers license that he cant drive to and from school and work and for his own personal enjoyment? Who the fuck are you to tell my 21 yr old he cant get married? Or get a credit card and take on debt (sign a contract)?
This is just typical of conservative thinking. Everybody doesnt want to march locksetp in your footprints. And you cant control peoples personal lives without stepping on their rights. But then you dont believe in democracy or society so it only makes sense that you would want to restrict peoples rights and so called privileges.

Privileges are there for everyone, they are only taken away when you abuse them.

I wonder if DonQ really is a conservative.

Anyway, as a whole society itself already limits much of this by arbitrary age lines. The "Who are you?" question is a bit over dramatic.

If society decided to adopt such a proposition the "Who are you?" question could be answered in the same way it is currently. They are society.

The likelihood of such a proposition being adopted is slim. However, over-dramatizing and pretending it was some natural right of your son's to drive at 18 rather than an arbitrary line drawn by society to begin with is entertaining, but not really an argument.

One could argue that there are no privileges in a free republic. Only a king or emperor may grant privilege.

Voting is a right, driving (well free travel anyways), marriage is a right, military service is a right (especially since it's not mandatory). Now I understand certain age requirements are in order for many things, dont get me wrong. However those are based on historical precedents often not so easily changed. Instead of raising the age to which we attain our rights why not try preparing our children for them better. With freedom comes responsibility after all.

You're an idiot.

In case anyone was wondering, DonQuixote read a study somewhere that said that the region of the brain that inhibits some risk taking behaviour may not be fully formed until age 25.

Then he ran off a logical ledge with it and now bases his entire philosophy on it, instead of rational setting delimiters and trying to figure out the best median solution to the issue without requiring an adult to wait until a third of their life is up to be able to live independently. This is typical of idiots. I am much more mature than DonQuixote.

All are limited by current arbitrary delimiters. There is nothing against changing requirements, other than current social conservancy.

Personally I think once you can join the military then you should have all aspects due any adult. If the nation can ask for the ultimate sacrifice, and you are of age to voluntarily choose to take that risk, you have reached past any arbitrary limitations that should be applied.

d

just tilting at wind mills..although, given the lengthing life expectancy, it might help to raise the 'age of reason'...especially for voting and joining the military

and yes, it is not likely to happen within our lives

oh well
