Diversity Makes Greatness
Think about it. What makes America any greater than other countries?

Money.

The countries that President Trump called s-hole countries simply don't have much money.

But the USA is great. We have lots of money.

If we were like those referenced countries, we would not have much revenue. We would have a small government. We wouldn't be able to do much government spending. We wouldn't have lots of programs to help people, our infrastructure would be absolutely minimal, we would have rolling power black-outs. Many regions would not have running water. Pollution would be greater. Product safety would be non-existent. We wouldn't have enough money to lock up that many criminals, so crime would be a much bigger problem. And we wouldn't have as many police, so we wouldn't be as secure. There wouldn't be as much work, so our unemployment rate would be much higher. Whatever jobs were out there would not pay very well.

So glad we have lots of money and America is great!

We don't have those kinds of problems because we have lots of money in the USA.

We have a national transportation safety bureau. We analyze and study how accidents happen and learn how to make travel safer. Our cars got a lot safer. If it wasn't for the government and Raplh Nadar, we wouldn't have seat belts or air bags. Government forced capitalists to do that. They didn't want to do it. The government forced cigarette makers to put warning labels and pay for public messages to inform everybody how dangerous smoking is. The government forced big tobacco to stop aiming ads at children. Millions are alive only because of our big government. We don't need to keep government out of business. We need more government oversight of business.

We owe so much of our great lifestyle to big government it is incalculable.

We could not afford any of that if we didn't tax the rich more.

Without progressive taxation, America would not be great.

America can only be great when we tax the rich more.

debt is a tool

so are taxes

when you examine the history of this nation

our best times were when the taxes on the mega wealthy were MUCH higher than now

its why the wealthy fund the republican partys cheating voters out of their rights in elections

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. What made / makes America great are two things. Liberty and opportunity. Those two things are what led to all the money / wealth you refer to.

There is a potential for we on the left to make a mistake here--a well intentioned, Jimmy Carter-like mistake.

We mustn't talk about ceilings when we talk about a more equitable distribution of wealth. America is not about ceilings.
Build your ceiling as high as you can--after everybody has a decent floor.

We clearly need some people in our society to pay much more in taxes. But be clear--the reason to collect those taxes is not to impose a ceiling on them, but to make sure that all of our citizens have a reasonable floor. Put the emphasis on that, or else they'll call us communists instead of socialists.

You are entitled to your opinion and I do disagree with it. What if we didn't have any rich people? What if we didn't have much revenue? America would be a more dangerous place with less opportunity. Millions more would have died from car crashes and cigarettes. Those millions of people living because of our big government oversight of industry are out there working jobs, contributing to society, paying taxes, generating revenue, some are creating businesses and jobs. That would not be happening without our big government. And those people are consumers. They buy products and services. They generate demand for business, contribute to the economy. They are helping to make America great. All because of big government and high taxes on the rich. Remember, that was all happening before the tax cut for the rich and the tax cut for big corporations.

Now, we have a big deficit.

We are living on borrowed money and borrowed time.

We have to tax the rich more.

Good point.

I don't think the potential for earnings should be limited. I do believe capitalists should be required to share the rewards of capitalism more equitably with the workers who generate them.

If capitalists want to earn more, they should guide their businesses toward more volume, and be regulated by government to share a minimum proportion of their profits with workers.

The potential for capitalist profits would still be unlimited.

And so would the potential for the middle class and the American Dream.
