American Culture

Mott the Hoople

Sweet Jane
OK.....I'm sure some wise ass is going to say American Culture is an oxymoron. Be that as it may. I'd like to start a list of Americas cultural contributions to the world. I have 7 to start off with.

#1. Jazz music. Easily Americas greatest contribution to world culture.
#2. Harley Davidson Motor Cycles.
#3. Cheerleader outfits. (which are right up there with Frances greatest invention. The Bikini).
#4. Atomic Bombs (Hey! What say's "Fuck you!" better than a nuclear warhead?)
#5. Hamburgers (yea I know...they weren't invented in America but by God who did all the heavy lifting making them world famous?)
#6. Fish Finders. With out a doubt the souths greatest invention (after Jazz music).
#7. Softcore Pornography.

Hula hoops
Coca Cola
Skateboards
Mowtown
Automobile
Another winner here. Coca Cola. Hula Hoops? Sorry that was a local fad that died. Skateboards? I'd have to get back with you on that one. Motown, love the music but again...covered by Jazz. Automobile? Sorry....that's a European invention.

Hardcore pornography
Down 3D......though we all give heart felt thanks to Linda Lovelace, the first Goddess of porn, for mainstreaming pornograpy.....that doesn't change the fact that hardcore pornography, like the bikini, is a French contribution to world culture.

Having said that.......Viva Le France!!

So the revised list so far is:

#1. Jazz music. Easily Americas greatest contribution to world culture.
#2. Harley Davidson Motor Cycles.
#3. Cheerleader outfits.
#4. Atomic Bombs
#5. Hamburgers
#6. Fish Finders. With out a doubt the souths greatest invention (after Jazz music).
#7. Softcore Pornography.
#8. Baseball
#9. Basketball
#10. Coca-Cola
#11. Blue Jeans
#12. Bourbon or American Whiskey.

Keep them coming folks!

There really weren't a lot of modern pop music genres not created in America. Latin America perhaps comes in second to America. The UK created dubstep, but I don't count that as a positive cultural contribution to the world.

But pop music itself has been around longer than America. Almost all forms of American music, except Jazz and it's derivatives, The Blues, R&B and Rock n Roll, came from Europe. Pop and Country music are directly descended from European folk music.

Country music was something invented in the 20's for the ears of nostalgic suburbanites to sit and reminisce about how desirable the country life of was, pretending as if it wasn't miserable and shit, as those of us condemned to actual rural life know full and well. Pop music is descended from rock.
