An American will win the Vuelta

Mott the Hoople

Sweet Jane
Chris Horner has only one stage left to go to win La Vuelta Espania (Tour of Spain) and that will be tomorrows largely ceremonial parade laps around Madrid. That will make him only the third American to win one of cyclings Grand tours . The other two are;

Greg Lemond who won the Tour de France in 86, 89 and 90
Andy Hampstein (born in Columbus, OH) is the only American to win the Giro de Italia (88)

Chris will also earn another distinction. At 41 years of age he will be the oldest rider to ever win a Grand Tour stage race.

Congratulations Chris Horner!!

The Vuelta is notoriously difficult for non-Spaniards to win as it is well known that Spaniards of different teams will work together to attack non-Spanish riders. This is a huge win for Chris and American cycling.
