Dear Open Letter Writers,
Nothing says "I need attention" like an Open Letter! Generally speaking, the party in which you wish to address, doesn't really give a shit about your open letter, any more than they would care about your private letter. You simply use the open letter to air your laundry and express your opinion, which is fine, but why put it in the form of a letter? Why not just say... This is what I would say if I could write a personal letter to so-and-so, knowing they would read it... and then tell what you think? It makes as much sense, and you don't come off looking like a needy goob.
It's always a bit frustrating to come across an "Open Letter" on a message board, because, what are you supposed to say? Unless the letter is to you personally, but then, why would it be open? It kind of makes you feel as if you're sticking your nose into someone else's business, invading their privacy, reading their open mail! It would probably be better for you to just write a regular letter and close it, then mail it to the person you are addressing, and see what happens. They probably won't ever read it, but they probably aren't going to read the open letter either. At least that way, you could salvage some dignity, and not appear to be so desperate. But, maybe that is the point of an Open Letter? Maybe it's intended to show people just how desperate and frustrated you are, that you would write a letter to someone, and show the whole world! Remind me not to ever tell you any of my personal secrets, okay???
Sincerely,
Dixie
