These were young women, and children, from foreign countries where they had been sheltered. Tate stole their wallet, raped them, and held them in a country they did not speak the language of. It was classic lover boy human trafficking.

These girls, some who were underage(and therefore the porn they were making was child porn) were being held against their will, and were not profiting from the porn they were forced to make.
