Ghost of the Past
Taps is quite possibly the saddest song ever. I have played it hundreds of times, and tomorrow I will play it yet again at a ceremony honoring our veterans and it always makes people cry. I learned to play it when I was about 12 years old. I didn't learn to appreciate it until I was much older.

I remember years ago, trying to rush between buildings on post before the end of the day so I wouldn't get caught out when the call was sounded. Back then it was just 24 stupid notes that I had to wait through before I could do whatever it was I was doing. I was young and stupid.

With age, I have a new appreciation for those 24 lonely notes. Having just watched the call sounded at the memorial service at Fort Hood, I am struck once more by how very much can be said with so little. 24 notes...
